Pocket Watches

Unlike wristwatches, pocket watches lack straps. They are designed to fit comfortably into garment pockets. Pocket watches usually have a chain to secure the watch to the user's clothing. They are often considered to be a men's accessory, although some women carry them as well.

kronotron , as far as i know were a company who designed and mad their own branded watches around the fifties-sixties, but used - under licence SEIKO parts and movements. I own a KRONOTRON watch in mint condition, never worn and still in its box, a 'wind-up' watch which has a sweep-second hand and runs for around 18 hours on a single wind-up. the watch is worth around £60.00 but perhaps a great deal more to a collector considering the condition. If your pocket watch is in mint as well, it should fetch around the £85- £120 bracket.

How do you find out about a 1890s civic watch co pocket watch?

It is rumoured that The Civic Watch Company was a sub-brand of the Omega Watch Company in the early part of the last century, and used on its export watches. (I have seen this in print several times, though have not substantiated it myself. I do, however, have two mens wristwatches in my collection that show obvious similarities: one a 1917 Omega, and the other a Civic of simlar vintage, and so it wold not surprise me if this story were correct.) A question: Are you very sure of your pocket watch's age? If I were very determined to find out more about this watch, I would start at Omega.

What is a jewal in a pocket watch?

Watches have many moving parts, with wheels and pivots and shafts that can cause wear where they are held in place. So instead of metal moving against metal, which would cause friction and wear, watch makers designed jewels which cause very little friction or wear. The jewels can be made of diamonds, sapphires, or most commonly rubies, with a small hole drilled in them to hold the shaft of a pivot or wheel.

More jewels are an indicator of watch quality, in general the higher the jewel count, the less wear and friction the watch will have, and the more accurate and long lasting the timepiece will be.

There are many different kinds of jewels including balance, friction, flat, center, pallet and roller jewels. Each are physically different, but are designed to reduce friction and wear on a moving metal part inside a mechanical watch. Each jewel will help the watch run more smoothly, more accurately and have a longer life. Each jewel adds to the cost and complexity of a watch movement, therefore a watch with more jewels costs more to make and makes the watch more valuable and long lasting http://www.pocketwatcher.org/category/.watch_information.jewelswhatarethey/

How do you adjust the time on a relic pocket watch?

On the back of the watch you can stick your fingernail (or a very small screwdriver) under the little thumbscrew and push it up. Then you can set the watch by turning the thumbscrew. When finished, push the thumbscrew back down. You can also check the site: www.relicbrand.com but for most pocketwatches you have to pull out the turning mechanism that is right next to the button that opens the watch so you can see the time. Just pull it out all the way and change the time, Half way to change the date.

How much gold is there in a 14k gold pocket watch?

That depends on several factors. 14k gold means that the gold content is .583% pure gold with other alloys added to make the metal harder, usually copper. However, only a portion of the weight of a pocket watch is the case. The movement, metal reinforcements, hands, crystal, winding stem, hinges, etc. are almost always other metals. And every watch is different when it comes to how dense or heavy the case is. Some general percentage weights for antique pocket watch cases are as follows;

* 14k gold Hunter cases are between 38% to 50% with 40% being average

* 14k Open faced cases are between 30% to 45% with 35% being average

* Silver Hunter cases average around 70% of the total watch weight

* Silver Open Faced cases average around 65% of the total watch weight

So a 14k gold hunters watch (not gold filled or rolled) that weighs 100 grams would have approximately 40 grams of 14k gold, or 23.3 grams (.583 X 40) of pure gold.

Hope this helps

Pocket watch stamped empress a.w.c.co case made in Canada with duracy made in US 7 jewels what year of manufacture and worth?

Hello - What do you mean by "with duracy made in US"? I have a watch with an Empress case and the movement is Lonville, a Swiss maker. I am guessing that the watch was made and sold sometime between 1900 and 1915. I recently bought a similar one for about $55. They are not really worth much unless they are in mint or excellent condition -- the most you could get would be $300 or so, I believe. Anyway, I would be interested in buying yours for parts. Good luck!
