In the 16th century pocket watches were popular for men to wear. It was more of a fad. It wasn't until world war 1 wristwatches became popular. They were called trench watches and were worn by men in the military.

Like most pocket watches it all depends on which one and what condition it is in. For a "time only" you would be looking at about $600.00 in fair condition to $1,000.00+ in mint condition. Whereas if you had a perpetual moon phase calendar with minute repeater in mint condition it would be about $35,000.00 dollars.

It means that the gold components of that pocket watch are made of 18 karat gold. The max is 24 karat gold (pure gold). Most high end jewelry are made of 18 karat and very rarely 21 karat. There are no 24 karat as they would be at high risk since pure gold is very malleable (can bend easy). Since 18 karat and 21 karat are not 100% pure they are mixed with usually copper for yellow gold or silver if you have white gold.

Does it have a hallmark? Strawbaum is a very rare surname. My grandfather was an antique dealer and his surname was Strawbaum. He was originally trading in Yorkshire but moved to Brighton. I will have to ask my mother for the dates. His father - my great grandfather - apparently left his family with his eldest son and moved to Kimberley to join the search for diamonds. I would be interested to buy this watch if you still have it. I don't know the value but it should be possible to find out from the condition and the date.
