Poison Ivy has a naturally secreted oil called Urushiol by the Japanese. It can be spread but the weeping reaction of your skin is NOT contagious. However, the oil secreted by poison ivy is insideous and pervasive. You must vigorously wash your self and your clothing to remove its traces. Prevention from assumed exposures is to frequently rinse exposed skin and change clothing often, also considering ivy blocker products.

Yes this guy is correct but not really. The plant dies but the oil in the plant "Urushiol" that gives people the rash stays active on any surface, including dead plants, for up to 5 years. So even if the plant dies the urushiol oils are still there on the plant and anything else that plant touched to give you the rash. So the plant does die in the winter but not the oil in the plant stays active

How long does a poison ivy plant live?
Poison Ivy is an opportunistic invasive woody perennial species whose vines always survive the winter and produces leaves that emerge in early spring that persist throughout the growing season till first killing frost, at which time the leaves drop off the vines. ALL remaining vines and fallen leaves each both retain their poisonous characteristic urushiol, always can still give you a nasty rash. The plant lives in either one of two ways. As a vine in forest it scales climbing up tree trunks, sides of building and walls, or on the ground the trailing vines may stretch outwards reaching a 1/4 mile in length. The mature plants, those that are either 2 or more years old, or grow 3 feet or taller most often produce abundant fragrant and prolific yellowish to creamy off white looking flowers that next mature into seeds that most all wildlife love to eat. It is the wildlife, i.e.,birds, chipmunks, wind and rain and flooding that help next to spread the seeds about, makes this noxious plant ubiquitous! BTW cashew nuts, pistachio nuts and mangoes all botanically exist in same family as poison ivy/oak. Who knew?
I just looked this one up! The Rhyme is, "Leaflets three, let it be!"

Will bleach and water kill poison ivy?
From personal experience pure bleach on a cotton ball rubbed onto the affected area works better than anything I have ever tried. The itch goes away almost immediately and the healing time is cut in half at least. Every time it begins to itch again, rub some more on. It will only burn if the skin has been irritated by scratching and even this feels better than the miserable, constant itch. This method keeps the itch away for several hours. This also works on insect bites that itch such as chiggers & bee stings.
How fast does poison oak rash develop?
From WebMD: The rash usually appears 8 to 48 hours after your contact. But it can occur from 5 hours to 15 days after touching the plant. The rash usually takes more than a week to show up the first time you get it on your skin. But the rash develops much more quickly (within 1 to 2 days) after later contacts. The rash will continue to develop in new areas over several days but only on the parts of your skin that had contact with it or those parts where it was spread by touching.
yes it is contagious. It also gets on furniture and clothes. When my son had it I bought and egg crate and made him stay on it until it healed. Then I threw the egg crate away. Use gloves when touching clothes to wash. Call pharmacy and talk with them they can tell you what to do.
This above answer is very misleading, as only under certain circumstances can one get poison ivy from another person. When the original oils from the plant are still one your skin, it is contagious to someone else, but these original oils are taken away once the first shower is taken. After the first shower is taken, an individual is no longer contagious. Any liquid that is produced by ones body due to the poison ivy, however gross, can not give someone else an outbreak.
