Polar Bears

Known scientifically as Ursus Maritimus, the polar bear is native to the Arctic Circle, and is the world's largest carnivore species found on land. It is classified as a vulnerable species, with 5 of the`9 polar bear subpopulations in decline. They have a reputation as the only animal that actively hunts humans, but in fact, anything they encounter is potential prey.

What is a polar bear's prey?

Community Answer 1

Their diet is almost entirely seals that surface through or cross the ice. They will occasionally attempt to kill vulnerable walruses, or small beluga whales that swim near the surface.

Community Answer 2

A polar bears principle prey are seals, which it hunts out on the frozen ice pack during winter. During summer, when the icepack has melted, the polar bear lives mainly off accumulated body fat stored during the winter. It may scavenge on washed up carcases of seal and whales during the lean summer months. If the freezing of the sea is delayed too long at the approach of winter, polar bears have been known to have starved to death. Hunger may force the polar bears to enter the human townships in search of food from bins, causing conflict.
Seals are the preferred diet/prey for Polar Bears. Most of its diet consists of ringed or bearded seals. They are also known to hunt and kill adult Walruses and even Beluga Whales. Mature/Adult bears tend to eat only the calorie rich skin and blubber of the seal, whereas youngsters consume the meat as well. They have been known to even raid bird nests and feed on chicks and eggs.

Do polar bears adapt?

Polar bears normally live in extremely cold environment .They have fur with hollow bristles to insulate and trap warm air to protect themselves from external freezing low temperature and preserve the body heat. They also have thick layer of fat under their skin.

With any change in their habitat to a warm region they will either shed their fur bristles or may not be able to adapt the changed habitat and perish.
better to ask how did the ancestors of polar bears adapt.

1) a rapid but graduated change of fur color

2) extra size

3) most don't hibernate and are active looking for food all year round

females feast before denning but hibernating would reduce body temperature (seasonal changes awaken black bears)

4) they are able to alter metabolic rates during times of food scarcity (black bears too can do this but will have times when food is plentiful an hibernate for another period of the year)

5) bear eat a wide verity of food and are prepared to roam for it. Polar bears subsist mainly on mammals (but will eat vegetation during periods of the year when able to access tundra)
warm water proof fur that traps heat

white camofluage that helps them camofluage in the snow big teeth to eat snow things

With what other organisms do polar bears interact?

they meet other animals as they find prey, go hunting, and find other polar bears.

Why does a polar bear have a thick fur?

Polar bears have fur to keep themselves warm. Underneath is lots of fatty tissue and thick fur. If they didn't have it then they wouldn't be able to adapt to their environment and would freeze. The fur acts as a barrier between their skin and the water and helps them survive the brutal winds, freezing water and cold weather of the Arctic. Polar bears actually have transparent fur over black skin. Reflection of the sunlight from the densely packed transparent hairs makes polar bears seem to be white. The bears' black skin absorbs heat from the sun. The transparent fur is made up of hollow hairs called guard hairs. These air-filled guard hairs help transmit heat from the sunlight to the polar bear's black skin as a solar heat collector. In turn, the reflection stops the heat being lost from their black skin. Their fur is also waterproof, so it helps keep the bears warmer when they are in water.

Why are polar bears going extinct?

They are not going extinct. The stable population is around 25000 animals now.
a few reasons.

firstly, Fishermen are capturing the fish from around the Antarctic, reducing the chances of the polar bears finding food.

secondly, some people kill them purposely for their fur.

and lastly, Global warming is an encroaching factor.

the high temperatures are melting the icecaps.

How do polar bears prey on seals and fish?

Claws are great for grooming: they use their sharp claws to groom their body so it stays nice and clean A body for swimming:they use their great streamlined body to swim through the harsh seas of the Antartica Fur for warmth:their soft smooth fur keeps them warm in the chilli weather keeping cool:seals have to protect themselves from the shivering seas of antarticaso they relax keeping a look out:seals have to watch to see if any body comes and steals their babys they keep guard

How have polar bears adapted to the tundra?

Polar bears have adapted to the ice and tundra due to the fat layers that are under their skin and extremely thick fur. A polar bear is white so that it can blend in to it's environment and have protection from predators, and can not easily be spotted by prey.

How many baby Polar Bears are born at the time?

Female polar bears usually give birth to only one or two cubs at a time. It is extremely rare for more than two cubs to be born, and if there are more than two it is unlikely that all of them will survive.

How does a polar bear adapt to cold climate?

The polar bear has very thick, insulating fur. Their paws are very large which helps them to swim.

A thick layer of blubber (which is up to four point five inches thick) provides polar bears with such excellent insulation that their body temperature rate remain the same even at 34°F.The polar bear's ears and small tail also help prevent heat loss. Polar bears have two layers of fur so then they are more protected from the cold. The only problem with polar bears is that they have more problems with overheating than they do with cold. Even in very cold weather, they very quickly overheat when they try to run.
They get used to it. they are living in a big cold place ALL THEIR LIVES.

What are some descriptive words for polar bears?

What is being done to help endangered polar bears?

Not much. Some nonprofit organizations are trying to draw attention to it, but there first has to be a real awareness that we are losing the polar icecap. Listen to the people in the US Congress and you can hear that some don't think there is a problem. Despite the fact we have lost 30% of the ice cap there are people who think this is just a temporary thing.

What do polar bears eat and where do they get it?

The polar bear's most common hunting method is called still-hunting. The bear uses its excellent sense of smell to locate a seal breathing hole, and crouches nearby in silence for a seal to appear. The polar bear eats seals most often.

Polar bears also smell seals in their caves under the ice. The bears then break through the ice and hope to catch a seal before it can swim away.

The polar bears favorite food source is the ringed seal.
they eat fish and they catch it by grabbing them out the water or swimming to get them

Where did polar bears originate?

Polar Bears may have come into existence only 150,000 years ago, when Brown Bears were trapped by an ice age and had to adapt quickly to the icy environment to survive! && Also, scientists found the fossil of a Jawbone from a Polar Bear 130,000 years ago.

Why do polar bears give birth to live young?

Polar bears, like all bears, give birth to live Young.
yes.

Which of these situations is the main threat to the survival of polar bears?

Polar Bears are very vulnerable to climate change and human hunting. Due to their sheer size, they have no natural predators except themselves. Large males have been known to kill off younger/smaller bears to cut out on competition. Man has been hunting these giant carnivores for centuries for its skin and fur. As of now, approximately 20000 to 25000 animals exist in the Arctic wilderness. Their numbers are steadily declining due to habitat loss and hunting. Oil and Gas exploration in the Arctic too is a significant cause for the decline in Polar Bear numbers. Due to human activity and global warming, the ice caps are melting. So, the effective land that the bears have for hunting is coming down. Pollution too is killing off prey species. So, everything put together is endangering the species.
