Pope Benedict XVI retired on February 28, 2013, and a new pope, Pope Francis, was elected two weeks later.

Of course, Benedict was a real pope, elected by the College of Cardinals in 2005 to replace John Paul II. However, Pope Benedict X was an anti-pope.

The popes are normally chosen from the younger Cardinals, at least this has been common practice of the Catholic Church for the last thousand years or so. All Catholic clergy take a solemn vow of celibacy before they are ordained to the deaconate. The Eastern Rites and the Latin Rite (with regard to permanent deacons) allow married men to be ordained but they still take a vow of celibacy, which means they could not remarry if their wife died, and only celibate clergy are chosen to be Bishops. So, there is no likelihood of a married man being chosen for pope, and no clergy may ever marry, in other words, Pope Benedict has never had a wife.
He is a Roman Catholic Priest, and they are not allowed to get married.

He will read, pray and meditate but will in no way be involved in the governing of the Church.

Benedict will have to forgo the red shoes as they are only worn in the Vatican by the Pope, if he so wishes to wear them. Outside the Vatican, some cardinals do wear red shoes.

Benedict retired on February 28, 2013, and is currently 'unemployed.' He will spend the rest of his life in the Vatican praying, meditating and reading but will have no official function in the governance of the Catholic Church.

There have been no official pronouncements about Benedict's current state of health. However, recent news videos seem to show him in good health but showing definite signs of his age.
