Last night after consuming a large piece of lemon/poppy seed cake, I developed one of the worst headaches ever. It came on about an hour after ingesting it. That is the only thing I can attribute the pain to. What an awful night. No more poppy seeds for me.

no, the dried seeds of papaver orientale (oriental poppy) are not opium, opium is the dried sap from papaver somniferm (opium poppy), a related species.
however, it is interesting at least to me that I have run across a person who used oriental poppy pods and opium poppy pods interchangeably for recreational drug use. I have also met a different person who sapped oriental poppies and smoked the sap when they ran out of their legally prescribed prescription opiates when he couldn't make it to the pharmacy (and yes, it was a legitimate prescription, none of that faking illness bull) which makes me think the seed pods of oriental poppies do have a similar drug value to opium poppies. more interesting is that even when shown the difference, the guy using it medicinally still believed that he was sapping opium poppy and the other person who used the pods recreationally did not know the difference until he stumbled upon it online one day. another interesting footnote is that oriental poppies are legal to consume in most places, including the united states.

Can you eat a poppy seed bagel before a urine drug test?
They could in the past, but the sensitivity level has been adjusted to prevent this from happening. And the number that you would have to eat to get a positive result currently is more than you could eat in a few days!
Answer
Actually it depends on who is doing the testing. Standard over the counter tests wont pick up on it but the labs that probation offices and other court ordered urinalysis tests go to will read it, and it doesnt take much! I am currently in drug court and a fellow client there just had a false positive from eating two poppy seed bagels the day before. They told our group that it came back positive for methadone, however there is a difference in the chemical make up and the tests they did concluded it was poppy seeds from food before they even asked him. I know every one says you need to eat an obscene amount of poppy seeds to get a false positive but they have adapted their tests to be very sensitive to anything that could even remotely be drugs in your system I am also on drug court and was placed in jail for two days because i ate JUST ONE poppy seed bagel. It does not take much to fail
