Well, you get a hamster from the cook on the train, and you get toys for him to play with by solving puzzles. Toaccess them, you open the professor's trunk and press hamster. There you can set out a course and you've got to try and get your hamster, (whatever you want to call it) to walk as many steps as possible so that it can get as slim as possible. When it gets skinny, it will say that your hamster will now sniff out hint coins for you.

You may need to be more specific to get the answer you want. In my understanding, you are talking about Emmy Altava from Professor Layton and the Spectres Flute (as well as Eternal Diva). I also assume you are talking about her past. It is explained in PLatSF that Emmy was accused of a crime she didn't commit, and a young Layton defends her and solves the case. From that day, she has been trying to work with Professor Layton and help him in return. I hope this is what you were asking. Being in Europe, I haven't received the next instalment in the series( Mask of Miracle) So anything that happens to her in that, I am not aware of. :)
