We see this in western public lands where there is protected wildlife, reparian areas as well as key archaeological sites. Usually, the issue is mining. Historically, the mining companies come in and then trade for other land once mining is done. Reparations have never truly worked and there is plenty of damage to water systems due to run off from tailings. When you drive in the back country of the Santa Rita Mts, you can see orange water flowing. As far as a view, in coal and copper mining areas, entire mountains have been removed with tailings left behind. Nothing will grow on the tailings and the ecosystems are gone. In Arizona, there is the additional issue with the use of water and the effects on local water tables. Hudbay Co. is trying to get permission for Rosemont mine, even though nearby community wells are drying up even from the limited testing so far. They have also closed off public roads to currently used recreational sites that could be eliminated if mining ever takes place there.
