When are raccoons more active?
I have raised many, many orphaned baby raccoons for a local wildlife rescue group over the years and do NOT recommend anyone attempt to make a pet out of them. While sweet and affectionate as babies their disposition changes drastically once they are adolescents. In most areas it is illegal to keep wildlife as pets. However, if you live in an area where it is legal and insist on making your own mistakes I have a few recommendations.1.) You must get the baby before its eyes are open. The baby will imprint on the first living creature it sees when its eyes open. If the first thing it sees is its mother it will be very difficult to handle and will always be quite nasty to anyone but its mother.
2.) Depending on the area you live, babies are born in the early spring. In the south that would be in late March or early April.
3.) The baby will have to be kept warm and bottle fed for about 8-10 weeks. You must also manually stimulate it to pee and poop for the first few weeks.
4.) It cannot be given cow milk as the baby cannot digest it. Cow milk will eventually kill it. You must give it a milk substitute such as KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement) available at better pet shops or veterinary offices.
5.) Before you commit to raising a baby raccoon click on this link and read the entire website. It is a huge commitment to raise a baby raccoon and, even if you are successful, you are going to eventually have a nasty tempered and potentially dangerous animal on your hands.
Scientists have determined that raccoons have a vocabulary of over 51 various vocalizations, including a "whoop-whoop" like sound, whistle, snarl, growl & grunt, hisses, scream and whinny. Baby raccoons make purring, chittering, cooing or crying sounds of varying intensity depending on their level of stress or contentment. When startled or frightened adults may let out a bark not unlike that of a dog.
Raccoons are sometimes preyed upon by wolves, coyotes, jaguars, cougars, and bobcats. Young raccoons are sometimes taken by owls and foxes and other smaller predators. In some areas alligators, caimans, crocodiles and large constrictor snakes will also prey on raccoons.
How do you remove raccoons from a yard?
Make sure trash bins are secured and you are not leaving any pet food outside. If you remove any possible food source for raccoons they will go elsewhere. If that doesn't work, call your local Animal Control office for recommendations.
