Where did Ramayana took place?

Vaalmiki wrote the great epic Ramayana.

There was a long period of oral tradition before the Ramayana was actually written, and the original strand of the story drew upon various pre-existing folk tales about Rama. Like many other classical poems written in ancient times, the exact date and time of the genesis of Ramayana is yet to be determined accurately. The reference to the Greeks, Parthians, and Sakas shows that the time of composition of Ramayana cannot be earlier than the second century BC. But the consensus is that Ramayana was written between the 4th and the 2nd centuries BC with augmentations up to about 300 CE. Linguistically and philosophically, a period just after the Vedic age, would most suit the content of the epic.

The Great epic Ramayana itself points out certain celestial occurrences during the period of Rama, about which period it was cited to be created. Going by these facts, Ramayana seems to have been created about 3000 BCE or before.

What are the characters of the story Ramayana?

It is a Hindu epic that tells the story of Prince Rama of Ayodhya, one of the avatars of the god Vishnu, and his wife Sita.

Rama was born to King Dasharathra of Ayodhya, but his mother dies and his father remarried while he was still young. One day there was a contest in a nearby kingdom for the hand of the princess Sita. Whoever could string the bow of the god Siva would win, as her father thought that no-one would achieve this feat and he would keep his daughter by his side. Rama won and married Sita.

When he was old enough Rama was declared the heir to the throne but his stepmother wanted her son Bharata to become king so she used a favour the king owed her to persuade him to banish his son to the forest for 12 years. Not wanting to cause his elderly father any trouble, Rama went without protest from the kingdom. He went to live with his wife in the forest.

Ravanna, the demon king of Lanka, wanted Sita for himself so he decided to kidnap her but Rama and Sita by then had lived in the forest for many years and they had a small hut magically protected for Sita's safety while Rama went hunting. Ravanna had one of his friends turn themself into a golden deer and show itself to Sita, who asked her husband to capture it for her. While Rama went to catch the deer Ravanna, disguised as a wandering holy man, visited Sita and she stepped outside her circle of protection to talk to him.

Ravanna captured Sita and took her to Lanka with him, and when Rama found out he was determined to get her back. He set out with his brother-in-law Lakshmana and the monkey god's top general Hannuman to find his wife. Lanka was an island but the army of monkeys formed a bridge to it with their bodies. An epic battle ensued, but eventually Sita was rescued and the demon vanquished. To prove she had been faithful to her husband, Sita walked through fire to prove her purity.

The 12 years was by then up and Rama returned to his kingdom, his path led by the many lamps the people of Ayodhya had left out to guide his way home.

This si the tradition followed at the festival of Divali.

Who instructed valmiki to write Ramayana?

The Inspiration for Ramayana:

One day, sage Valmiki was going to the river Tamasa for his morning bath. As he was walking along the river bank, he watched a pair of cranes (krauncha), sporting with joy on a tree nearby. Suddenly, the male bird fell down, killed by a hunter's arrow. The female bird, seeing its mate fallen to the ground, flapped its wings, and squawked piteously.

Valmiki's grief burst forth in a curse, "O cruel man, as you have killed one of these loving birds, you shall wander homeless all your life."

Ma nishada pratishtam tvam agama shasvati sama / Yat krauncha mithunat ekam avadhih kama mohitam

(Desist O hunter! May you not get stability or peace for endless years, since you killed one of the pair of cranes, in love with each other.)

Immediately, the sage recovered his composure. He wondered why he got so angry as to curse another person. Recalling the words of his curse, the rishi discovered that the curse had taken the form of a beautiful verse (sloka). He wondered "How mysterious is the play (lila) of God!" and sat down to meditate.

Then, Brahma appeared before him and said, "This incident happened only to inspire you to write the divine story of Sri Rama. From sorrow (shoka) was born verse (sloka). You shall sing the story of Ramayana in this very poetic metre for the welfare of mankind." This poetic metre is called Anushtub chandas.

It has 16 syllables per line and a total of 32 syllables for a couplet.

The true purpose of the Ramayana is to awaken its reader spiritually, and to send him forth on the great journey that leads to Moksha, to God.
