Whatever his contract specifies. That's how a record label deals with an artist. They both sign a contract, the terms usually dictated by the label. If he is popular enough, he can ask for more money or go somewhere else.

The music lawyer representing the artist also does his job representing the interests of the artist. The lawyer(s) for the label (independent or major) represents the interests of the record label.

Asking for more money from the advance that a contract offers that must be paid back before earnings is a key factor prior to signing. The legal issues best handled by a music lawyer as a real estate agent represents a seller or buyer. The job of the artist is to sell recording product for the label and the investors which have to be repaid first before profits.

In general, it's not easy at all. Record labels can't survive without selling records. If your music is not good enough to sell records, then you probably wont be signed to a label. Generally it takes years of making music, and performing shows and selling cds. Thise shows labels that you can earn, and make you more likely to get signed.

On the other hand you have talentless kids like Justin beener or whoever that made a youtube video and now they have a record deal. Is the record deal he has good? Not at all, but he has it.

First you need to write a couple songs(so you actually have something for the label to look for). Then you need record your songs(with a video camera or web cam)and put your songs on Youtube. Note: Make sure your web cam/video camera is high quality, this will help you get more people to listen to your music. You can also put up videos on MySpace videos and AOL videos. A lot of times labels will look for people like you on Youtube, so make sure your music is good... Advertise yourself(if you are a solo artist)or your band! Remember the more time you put in to your music the better chance a label will find you.
