Was James Krowl one of Teddy Roosevelt's rough riders?

James Krowl was my great grandfather. Family lore has it that he lied about his age and went south with the NY regiment that met up with Roosevelt in Florida. He became Roosevelt's water boy. He is listed as having served in the Spanish American War on his death certificate even though his official record says that he enlisted several years after the war ended when he became of age. Many years later he is listed as being accepted into the Captain Malcolm Rafferty VFW (who was one of the officers from the New York regiment in Cuba)

William Rufus Shafter

Why did Theodore Roosevelt led a group of Rough Riders to capture what?

Kettle Hill in the battle of San Juan Heights. The hill is usually referred to a San Juan Hill.

How did William Tiffany from the rough riders really die?

He died after returning from Cuba, 25 August 1898, from some sort of sudden heart attack. It is possible he died from the after effects of typhoid fever or malaria, as he was in a sickly condition on his return from Cuba.

His obit is available from the New York Times.
