Who hits harder football or rugby?

There are big differences between rugby and American football. In rugby, all players are allowed to handle the ball, but the ball cannot be passed forward. The ball can be kicked forward in an attempt to gain better field position or to catch the other team unaware. Also, unlike American football, there is no blocking allowed in rugby. No player can shield or protect the ball carrier and the ball carrier cannot run behind his own players in an attempt to shield from the other team - doing so results in a penalty. If the player is tackled, play does not stop, as rugby is a continuous sport. Once tackled, the ball carrier must immediately release the ball. A penalty will be called if a player is tackled and does not make an attempt to get away from the ball. As the rugby tends to have non-stop action, players must be equally skilled both offensively and defensively.

What do women rugby players call the referee?

REF - Referee or Marm (said MAM) or Madam. It is a pleasant situation that in Rugby in both codes the referee is highly respected and in the past before female referees and officials were involved everyone playing the games referred to the referee as "sir". They still do today (now that's a note of respect ) This is why females are referred to as Madam etc.

Can you wear rugby boots for hockey?

Yes you can. However, Soccer studs are shorter beneath the sole of the boot than the regulation Rugby ones ( that is not an issue from a regulation perspective) and it does mean that grip is reduced. You would need to make sure that you have the type off boots that have screw in studs and replace them with the longer version - Normally the heel studs are the regulation length so you need to buy all heels studs. To check on stud regulation you can access the IRB site and search for boot regulations - there is a load of good info there to help you with rugby and the proceures and laws.

Where did Rugby league originate?

Rugby League originated in the north of England.

In 1886, the Rugby Football Union introduced strict amateur-only rules to combat the dominance of the game by working class northern clubs.

In 1893, a proposal to pay players six shillings when they missed work due to playing commitments is rejected by the Rugby Union.

In 1895, 21 rugby clubs from Lancashire and Yorkshire meet in Huddersfield and form the breakaway Northern Rugby Football Union.

In 1897, the Northern Union abolishes line-outs and reduces goals to 2 points and tries to 3 points.

In 1906, the number of players is reduced from 15 to 13, rucks and mauls are replaced by play-the-balls and rugby league is created as we know it today.

I love this question as it appears regularly in Answers.com. Please remember that these are IRB (International Rugby Board) regulations and they stipulate maximums for this subject.

Dimensions. The field of play does not exceed 100 metres in length and 70 metres in width. Each in-goal does not exceed 22 metres in length and 70 metres in width.

Does the ball have to touch the floor when the ball is knocked on in rugby?

The laws state that;

'Kicked directly into touch' means that the ball was kicked into touch without landing on the playing area, and without touching a player or the referee.

'The 22' is the area between the goal line and the 22-metre line, including the 22-metre line but excluding the goal line.

The line of touch is an imaginary line in the field of play at right angles to the touchline through the place where the ball is thrown in.

The ball is in touch when it is not being carried by a player and it touches the touchline or anything or anyone on or beyond the touchline.

The ball is in touch when a player is carrying it and the ball carrier (or the ball) touches the touchline or the ground beyond the touchline. The place where the ball carrier (or the ball) touched or crossed the touchline is where it went into touch.

The ball is in touch if a player catches the ball and that player has a foot on the touchline or the ground beyond the touchline. If a player has one foot in the field of play and one foot in touch and holds the ball, the ball is in touch.

If the ball crosses the touchline or touch-in-goal line, and is caught by a player who has both feet in the playing area, the ball is not in touch or touch-in-goal. Such a player may knock the ball into the playing area.

If a player jumps and catches the ball, both feet must land in the playing area otherwise the ball is in touch or touch-in-goal.

A player in touch may kick or knock the ball, but not hold it, provided it has not crossed the plane of the touchline. The plane of the touchline is the vertical space rising immediately above the touchline.
