Servals

The Serval is a medium-sized wild cat that lives in the open savannahs and wetlands of Western, Central and Eastern Africa. It has a yellow spotted coat, long legs and a slender body, resembling a miniature Cheetah. Its distinctive large ears are rounded and vertical, and its tail is marked with dark rings and a black tip. The Serval is a nocturnal felid that prey on rodents, lizards and amphibians on the ground, but it can also climb trees when hunting for birds. The population of the Serval is declining recently due to conflict with farmers, poaching and habitat loss. Learn more about the Serval in this category.

Do Servals roar or purr?

There are only four cats in the world that can roar: The Lion, Jaguar, Tiger and Leopard. These cats have specially-designed larynx's and hyoid bone in the throat that enables them to roar. No other species of cat can roar.

It is now thought that all cats, even "big" cats can purr. It is unclear why cats purr, although it is well known that domestic cats purr when content, to show affection or to comfort themselves when sick or in pain.

How many people own African serval cats in the US?

  • There are no true stats to this question because in the U.S it's illegal to own these cats and they can be considered dangerous. Serval cats can be 40 lbs., or more. While they are loving pets to their owners, they are dangerous to children (even if they don't mean too because they are so large and powerful) and do not like domesticated cats. When one leaves their home they must put the cat in a large cage and not leave the cat loose in their home. These cats need meat to eat, and many untrained owners that just like the thought of owning an African Serval Cat find they are troublesome to look after and expensive to feed. There is a problem with Serval Cats roaming free and some owners simply feel if they can't support the habit of feeding their Serval Cat they can simply give it to a zoo. Zoos do not want anymore large cats! The ASPCA (U.S.) or SPCA (in Canada) are tired of seeing African Serval Cats dropped on their doorstep. Owning an African Serval Cat is a big responsibility and one should study the history of these cats before deciding to own one.

Can you have a serval even if you are allergic to cats?

Possibly, though they're not really common pets.

They do not make good pets for the typical person, because:

  • They are illegal to own in some areas
  • Many veterinarians are unwilling to treat them
  • You can't just feed them cat food
  • They are nocturnal
  • They are wild animals, even if raised from infancy, and can revert to wild behavior unexpectedly
  • The tendency to revert to wild behavior gets stronger as they age
  • They are large enough to do serious damage to a child or domestic pet
  • Their ability to be litter-trained is spotty

.... and after all that it might turn out you're allergic to them anyway. They're closely enough related to domestic cats that they interbreed (the hybrid cross of a serval and a domestic cat is known as the "Savannah" breed; a few generations from the wild ancestor, they begin to behave more like the domestic cat).

You're probably better off either not getting a cat at all, or looking into one of the 'hypoallergenic' breeds.

Can you have a serval for a pet?

As a general rule, wild animals make very poor pets. Big cats don't have the same instincts that domestic cats do. They are notoriously hard to litter train and often really need a lot more space, sometimes including some sort of outdoor enclosure.

If you want a bigger cat that has that look and is kind of wilder, look at Savannah cats. They are descended from the servals but are better adapted to house living.

Other than that you'd have to check with your local dept of fish game and wildlife to find out rules on owning a wild cat.

Servals are very expensive and make terrible pets. Each year 30000 cats are put to sleep because they cannot find homes. Adopt a cat from your local shelter and donate money to help preserving small cats in the wild.

Why is the serval endangered?

The serval is NOT an endangered species. This is good, for all sorts of reasons. So many wild cats are endangered. The threat has largely come from the trades, fur and, sadly, pet. Another problem has been degradation of habitat, specifically deforestation. Fortunately, the serval ranks in the "Least Concern" category of potentially threatened animal species. At least for now.
