What is the history of the Long Tom shotgun?

Long Tom was a trade name sold by Sears Roebuck. They were manufactured by Crescent Firearms before 1930 and by Stevens/Savage after that. Probably last made around 1945.

AnswerI also have a "Long Tom" shot gun that was handed down to me by my father. I could be mistaken but I was I remember him telling me that he bought it at Wards for about $7.00. I was born in 1939 and he had the gun as long as I can remember. With the 36 inch barrel it points like a "dream" and with a full choke it does reach out there. It kicks like a son of a gun, too. AnswerPeter - If your dad bought your Long Tom early in the 1930's, it may have been chambered for a slightly shorter shell than you have used. Many were still being made for the 2 9/16" roll crimped ammunition instead of the modern 2 3/4" and 3" 'pie crimped' variety. Although the longer shells will chamber, they cannot open properly. This, plus the fact that the newer shells are usually loaded a bit hotter, causes a harder kick. It also makes it a bit harder to extract the spent shells.

What does crown grade mean on a mossberg 500?

Crown Grade labeled 500's have higher quality (grade) wood used for their stock/forend. Mine also has a gold trigger and chromed bolt. I cannot say if those are a standard feature, or vary depending on year made or batch produced, with any certainty. You would have to inspect yours to verify. Not a lot of information out there on them, and last I checked Mossberg's website doesn't mention any specifics either. Hope this helps a bit, I'll edit when/if I find more information on them.

What is a 410 shot gun?

This is a shotgun with an internal barrel diameter (called the "bore) of approximately .410" which shoots a shell which is about .410" in diameter.

It is the only shotgun shell size that uses this convention.

A 12 gauge shotgun, for example, does not have a bore of "12".

A 20 gauge shotgun has a smaller bore than a 12 gauge and a 10 gauge has a bigger bore than a 12.

Gauge size is based on the number of lead balls of the bore diameter which are required to make a pound (16 ounces). 10 balls, 12 balls, or 20 balls.

Who is silvester named on double barrel shotgun. Appears to be old no serial number and has a man with his dog engraved on one side and unknown initial with Silvester on the other side?

You could have a shotgun manufactured by Crescent City Arms. This company manufactured thousands of inexpensive shotguns from the late 19th century through around the 1930's. They would mark the shotguns in any manner that the customer wanted including names of hardware stores and any sexy name that would sell. Exact identification would be time consuming and likely not worth it.
