This shotgun was modified from a French military musket, probably an 1853 style that was manufactured at the Arsenal at Mutzig. Imp ale is an abbreviation for Imperial, indicating the weapon was produced some time after 1852. Durring the period immediately proceeding the Franco Prussian War 1870-71, the French took large numbers of obsolete muskets and turned them into breach loading firearms. These were subsequently sold off to Belgian arms dealers after the French defeat by the Prussians in 1871. The Belgians modified them once again by making them into shotguns for the civilian market. You have one of those shotguns.

Springfield made a 20ga trapdoor called the Foragers. There is a 12ga trapdoor out there called the "Zulu Snyder". They were converted French Mle 1857 percussion rifles converted to an 1867 breech loader and then converted into a smooth bore 12 ga.

I know this a really simple answer but take it to a gun specialist.

Depends on projectile size. # 9 shot probably won't travel 200 yards, but 00 or 000 buckshot or a deer slug might travel over a mile.

Do not try it, the likelihood of the gun exploding in your hands is very high.

The letters ELG, usually inside an oval, are the marking of the proof house of Belgium- by law, firearms made in Belgium had to go the the govt. facility to be test fired, and marked as "proofed". In the late 1800s, early 1900s, gunmaking was a major industry for Belgium. Thousands of firearms were made there, by hundreds of makers, and sold through every venue you could imagine- Sears sold quite a few for $10 or less. There are no specific production records for many of the makers (if they even kept them, they were lost in the war). Many were copies of other well known guns, with names intended to "borrow" fame of high quality guns- such as Barker- for the Parker gun Company, W. Richards- for the Westley Richards gun company, etc.

Most of these guns were made with compressed steel which is similar to Damascus. The enterprise shotguns were Belgium. In good usable condition this should be worth about $150.00 to 250 USD.
