In the late 1980s Smith and Wesson became a leader in the emerging market for handguns designed especially for women, with the Lady Smith. The Lady Smith was a .357 Magnum with a grip and trigger mechanism designed for smaller hands.

While there ARE specialized target auto pistol that are in caliber .38 Special, they are quite rare. The .38 Auto, and the .38 Super are both different cartridges from the .38 Special, and do not interchange. For everyday purposes, the .38 Special is a revolver cartridge, and the .38 Auto a semi auto pistol cartridge.

The small frame revolvers, Models 36, 37, 60, etc. were five shot and they were built upon the "J" frame.

The medium caliber revolvers: Models 10, 19, 13, etc. mostly in .38 Special and .357 Magnum were built on the "K" frame.

The larger guns like the Model 29, in calibers such as .44 Special, .44 Magnum, .45 Long Colt, and I believe perhaps .41 Magnum were built on the "L" frame.

The 38 Smith and Wesson Special is the full name for the 38 Special cartridge or revolver caliber with that designation, and so it is the same thing.

The 38 Smith and Wesson Special cartridge is not the same as the 38 Smith & Wesson cartridge or 38 Long Colt cartridge, and should not be able to fit into those revolvers, but in rare cases it may, so use caution.

Orbea was a fairly prolific gun maker in Spain. Many of their revolvers are copies of Smith & Wesson type actions. The ctg marking is abbreviation for cartridge. These were made in the 1920s-30s. Quality is less than a comparable Smith & Wesson, but better than junk. Value will depend on condition, but is typically $75-$150 or so. It would be prudent to have checked by a gunsmith for timing and cylinder end shake before shooting, and stay away from +P high energy ammo.
