How many pitches in an average softball game?

A pitcher should work up to the amount of pitches that they will usually throw if they are going to pitch the entire game. That is usually somewhere around 125 pitches. Better to be over prepared than under prepared.

Is it harder to hit a baseball or a softball?

a baseball is smaller so to me it would be harder to hit and it comes at you at like 90 mph and its not underhand so it would be way harder

That's absolutely wrong. Softballs are bigger than the bat is so you have to get just the right angle on it when you hit it to get a solid hit. Baseballs however are smaller than the bat so when you hit it you have a 70% chance it will hit the ball at a good angle. Also baseballs are thrown down, but softballs are thrown level. it is a proven fact that it is easier to lower your bat than it is to raise it. As for the speed difference, baseball pitchers are 66.6 ft away (correct me if I'm wrong) softball pitchers are only 45 ft away. it has been tested that a 60 mph pitch in softball is equivalent to a 90mph pitch in baseball. so therefore hitting a softball is much harder.

What is foul ball or foul territory?

Foul territory is that part of the playing field outside the first and third base lines extended to the fence and perpendicularly upwards.

A foul ball is a batted ball that settles on foul territory between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory, or that first falls on foul territory beyond first or third base, or that, while on or over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire or player, or any object foreign to the natural ground.

How far is first to second base on a softball field?

In order to answer this question you need to know the slope that is formed from the right angle form at first or third base. The distance from home to first is 60 feet. We'll call that "A". The distance from first to second is 60 feet. We'll call that "B". The line from home to second will be called "C". Using the pathagoreum formula, we can figure that distance out. A*A + B*B = C*C 60*60 = 3600 3600 +3600 = 7200 Now take the square root of 7200 and you have your answer. 84.852814 feet.

Why are softballs different sizes?

personally from a catcher as myself, softballs he are called softballs because of the size, color, and how hard it is, of course for womens softballl the ball is usually yellow with red stitching. the softball is clearly ten times larger than a regular baseball. at some times such as high school softball the ball has a soft leather outer skin but for the professionals its called the rules that it must have a hard texture.

Is there a difference between baseball and softball helmets?

There really is no need to wear a helmet if you're just watching. Foul balls do sometimes pop over fences, but most parks have nets and it is unlikely you will get hit by a ball.

If you are playing, it is necessary to wear a helmet while batting.

What type of softball is better for hitting the farthest distance?

Truthfully, a modified bat (rolled and/or shaved). To play an honest game, it will depend if you are ASA sanctioned or not. If so, go with a Louisville Slugger Voltage SB73V, it is the HOTTEST. Non-ASA, I would go with a (money is a factor in my decision) the Easton Synnergy SCN16BH (Brett Helmer Signature bat). It has pop rivaled only by illegals (not referring to anyone that speaks spanish LOL ;)) I am sure you can drop more than the $399 this Easton is going to cost to get something just a hair hotter but the difference will not be worth the money and this bat can be found on that E-auction place for less than $200. By the way, ALL composite bats hit better after they are broke in, keep that in mind. Buy the Brett Helmer Easton and do batting practice with it for a while before turning into your gamer. A broke in Freak, and others will hit better than a BH brand new. Hope this helps and remember when looking for THE BAT..... buy 3 or 4 THE BATS in different name brands, it fills your bag up and it is cool to feel the differences. I bag a Miken Mega Maniac, Easton Synnergy Brett Helmer, Worth Mayhem (blue with neon green writing) and the LS SB73V. READY FOR ANYTHING! ;)

What are variations of fastpitch softball pitches?

RISE BALL, CURVE BALL, DROP BALL

Add Fastball, change-up and screw ball.

It comes down to some other esoteric and idiosyncratic definitions and much like men's baseball there are some very fine definition points and creative labels given to pitches by players and coaches and also inconsistency in naming. In most fastpitch softball what would be called a curve in baseball is a drop ball (perceived vertical movement), and what baseballers would call a slider is a curve (perceived horizontal movement).

Missed above are screw-ball, change-up, and straight on fast ball. Essentially a ball can be delivered with different rotations and speed and that will impact the horizontal and vertical movement potential and everything else is a matter of physics. Curves, Screw, drop and rise balls appear to do what they do not because of some laws of physics that accomplished pitchers know how to break but because of the shifting perspective of those watching the ball and experience based predictions. A hitter who understands and identifies ball rotation and speed and can act on that instinctively will be a star.

What are official regulations for a bat in softball?

According to the 1997 edition of the Official Baseball Rules: The bat shall be a smooth, round stick not more than 2 3/4 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length. The bat shall be one piece of solid wood. NOTE: No laminated or experimental bats shall be used in a professional game (either championship season or exhibition games) until the manufacturer has secured approval from the Rules Committee of his design and methods of manufacture. Cupped Bats. An indentation in the end of the bat up to one inch in depth is permitted and may be no wider than two inches and no less than one inch in diameter. The indentation must be curved with no foreign substance added. The bat handle, for not more than 18 inches from its end, may be covered or treated with any material or substance to improve the grip. Any such material or substance, which extends past the 18 inch limitation, shall cause the bat to be removed from the game. NOTE: If the umpire discovers that the bat does not conform to (c) above until a time during or after which the bat has been used in play, it shall not be grounds for declaring the batter out, or ejected from the game. No colored bat may be used in a professional game unless approved by the Rules Committee At one time baseball bats were allowed to be flat on one side.

19th century bats were generally heavier and considerably thicker in the handle and had more of a gradual taper from the handle to the barrel about" 3 feet long, round, tapered and was to be between an inch and a half at the handle to three inches at the barrel. In 1857, the dimensions agreed upon were described as round, not to be more than two and one-half inches around in its thickest part and was to be no longer than 42 inches.

The National League made two major changes for 1885. It was now legal to have 18 inches of the handle wrapped in twine and one side of the bat was allowed to be flat. The American Association adopted this rule when they followed the same rules as the National League in 1887. In 1893, the bat was no longer allowed to be flat on one side but was required to be round. The length was still limited to 42 inches and the thickness of the thickest part was still two and on-half inches. The thickness of the bat was increased to two and three-quarters inches in 1895 and remains the same today.little league bats are 2 and a quarter inches and a pony league bat any size is leagle and a high school bat has to be a drop 3

How does drop affect a softball bat?

The drop is the second most important thing in sizing a player with a new bat. First is the proper length. Once you determine that, the player should swing the heaviest bat she can get around quickly. That's not to say the heaviest bat, but the heaviest bat she can get good bat speed with. For most high school age girls with above average ability that's -10 or even -9. For high school players with average or below (less than a .300 batting average) as well as younger girls the drop should probably be about -11 or -12.

As stated before, the first thing to find out is the proper length. To do that click the Bat Sizing Guide link

What is the drop?

Bat Length Minus The Drop = Bat Weight

"The Drop" is a common term for describing the weight of an aluminum bat. It is unique to aluminum and composite bats as the weight of a wood bat varies somewhat within each bat.

The drop simply means you take the length of the bat and subtract the drop to determine the weight.

For Example: The DeMarini CF4 is a -10 and is available in 31", 32", 33" and 34". Therefore, a 31" would weigh 21 ounces, a 32" would weigh 22 ounces and so on.
