The bat shall be one piece of solid wood. NOTE: No laminated or experimental bats shall be used in a professional game (either championship season or exhibition games) until the manufacturer has secured approval from the Rules Committee of his design and methods of manufacture. The indentation must be curved with no foreign substance added. The bat handle, for not more than 18 inches from its end, may be covered or treated with any material or substance to improve the grip. Any such material or substance, which extends past the 18 inch limitation, shall cause the bat to be removed from the game. NOTE: If the umpire discovers that the bat does not conform to (c) above until a time during or after which the bat has been used in play, it shall not be grounds for declaring the batter out, or ejected from the game. No colored bat may be used in a professional game unless approved by the Rules Committee At one time baseball bats were allowed to be flat on one side.

19th century bats were generally heavier and considerably thicker in the handle and had more of a gradual taper from the handle to the barrel about" 3 feet long, round, tapered and was to be between an inch and a half at the handle to three inches at the barrel. In 1857, the dimensions agreed upon were described as round, not to be more than two and one-half inches around in its thickest part and was to be no longer than 42 inches.

The National League made two major changes for 1885. It was now legal to have 18 inches of the handle wrapped in twine and one side of the bat was allowed to be flat. The American Association adopted this rule when they followed the same rules as the National League in 1887. In 1893, the bat was no longer allowed to be flat on one side but was required to be round. The length was still limited to 42 inches and the thickness of the thickest part was still two and on-half inches. The thickness of the bat was increased to two and three-quarters inches in 1895 and remains the same today.little league bats are 2 and a quarter inches and a pony league bat any size is leagle and a high school bat has to be a drop 3

How does drop affect a softball bat?

The drop is the second most important thing in sizing a player with a new bat. First is the proper length. Once you determine that, the player should swing the heaviest bat she can get around quickly. That's not to say the heaviest bat, but the heaviest bat she can get good bat speed with. For most high school age girls with above average ability that's -10 or even -9. For high school players with average or below (less than a .300 batting average) as well as younger girls the drop should probably be about -11 or -12.

As stated before, the first thing to find out is the proper length. To do that click the Bat Sizing Guide link

What is the drop?

Bat Length Minus The Drop = Bat Weight

"The Drop" is a common term for describing the weight of an aluminum bat. It is unique to aluminum and composite bats as the weight of a wood bat varies somewhat within each bat.

The drop simply means you take the length of the bat and subtract the drop to determine the weight.

For Example: The DeMarini CF4 is a -10 and is available in 31", 32", 33" and 34". Therefore, a 31" would weigh 21 ounces, a 32" would weigh 22 ounces and so on.

Why are batting averages in baseball and softball are expressed as a decimal to the thousandths place?

That is done to ensure that a winner can be crowned for the batting title. Someone may hit .359, someone else may hit .357. If the decimal point is not carried out to the thousandth, there would be a tie for the batting title. And if there is a tie for the batting title with the average rounded at thousandths, the average will be rounded at ten thousandths to see if that would determine a winner.

How do you clean a baseball bat without harming the paint?

There are a lot of do's and don'ts when doing this. First of all, DO NOT use any sort of metal polish or aluminum cleaner. This would work on older bats that are primarily bare metal and not painted. Also, do NOT use steel wool. This will scratch your bat faster than you can imagine.

What I have found to be highly effective is this: Get some Soft Scrub (without bleach) bath and kitchen cleaner (available at any grocery store). Get a 2-sided sponge (one with standard soft sponge side and one with the slightly coarse but not too rough side).

Dampen the sponge, and apply some soft scrub directly to the sponge. Then scrub the dirty areas of the bat. If you are using the soft sponge side, scrub vigorously. If you are using the coarse sponge side, scrub lightly. Scrub 1/4 to 1/2 the bat at a time.

Have a dry or slightly damp towel or rag handy to wipe off the dirt and residue that you just scrubbed off. DO NOT submerge your bat in water to rinse. If you have a 2-piece "composite" bat, there is always a slight chance water can enter at the joints and then begin to harm your bat from the inside.

In no time, you will have a sparkly clean bat. There is also a bonus of having your bat smell like lemons if you get the scented Soft Scrub.

In the outfield there is a left, left center, center, right center, and a right field. You may not need to put in a player in position at left center and right center but that is mainly up to you. It mostly depends I guess what team you're facing or how fast your outfielders are.

What is a pitch out in softball?

A pitch out is another term for intentionally walking a batter. What that means is the pitcher will pitch four balls(not strikes) in order to put the batter on base without giving her a chance to hit. The batter will only get to first base unless she steals or gets hit around in a later situation. The reason for this is normally when the batter is a very good hitter and the pitcher would rather give the batter after her a chance to hit so that a run isn't scored. Pitch outs are thrown very far out from the strike zone. The pitcher will throw only at 70 mph (not exactly- around that speed) while the catcher stands up and out of the way to catch it. A pitch out is a term for intentionally throwing a ball to the outside of the plate (where the batter cannot hit it) because you believe that the runner (usually on first) is going to try to steal a base. The pitch out allows the catcher to stand up as soon as the pitch is thrown and be in a throwing position as soon as he/she receives the ball. This allows the catcher to get the ball to the the target base very quickly and can greatly improve the chances of throwing out the runner. An intentional walk is when the pitcher intentionally throws four balls to put the runner on first. There are a number of situations where a team may want to do this. Example: there are runners on second and third and you want to setup a force play at home plate. In this case you would intentionally walk the batter.

Batter gets hit by pitch but doesnt move?

If the runner is attempting to touch home plate, I would not call the runner out for incidental contact by his teammates. However, if they would, for example, carry him off the field and he never attempts to touch home plate, I would call him out when he reaches the dugout area.

Whats better end-loaded or balanced softball bat?

If you are a slapper, like me, you will want a balanced light bat because you don't need to generate a lot of force to get on base. If you are a power hitter you would want a more end-loaded bat. The bat you want all depends on what kind of batter you are.

What is a good average in slowpitch softball?

110 mph? No, probably not. Most of the top men's pitchers throw in the 80's. There have been some studies done, though, showing that a 85 mph fastpitch is like a 100 mph baseball pitch in terms of reaction time the hitter has. Remember in baseball, the pitcher is 60' 6" from home plate. In fastpitch, the pitching rubber is only 46 feet away, and many of the good pitchers leap towards home, so they are even closer by the time they release the ball. If 85mph doesn't sound fast to you, also consider they are throwing a 12" ball instead a 9" baseball. Some fastpitch hitters will tell you that it's harder to hit an 85mph fastpitch than a 100 baseball, because you have so little time to react. see http://www.iscfastpitch.com for information on their annual "World Tournament". It is the "World Series" of men's fastpitch.
