If you are playing singles in table tennis, the ball can hit any part of your opponent's half of the table after passing over the net.

As long as the ball hits the playing surface, the service will be legal. The white lines are part of the playing surface.

However, if the ball touches the net during service, before touching the playing surface, the service must be replayed.

But if you're playing doubles, the service must only touch the right half court.

The only instance where the ball must go between your opponents corners of the table is if the receiver is a wheelchair user, then the service must exit between the two corners on his side.

The game of table tennis has its roots in lawn tennis.

When lawn tennis became very popular in the 1870s & 1880s, game makers tried to emulate its success by developing indoor versions of the game.

So there were card games, board & dice games, rackets & balloon games and even tiddledy winks tennis games.

But the first use of the name Table Tennis occurred on a board and dice game by J.H.Singer of New York around 1884 and it's also known that a game of Table Tennis was offered in the 1887 game catalogue of George S. Parker, founder of the famed Parker Brothers in America.

But the first action game of tennis on a table was in 1890, so it was David Foster of England who is the founder/inventor of table tennis in 1890.

The official rules of table tennis state that you have two serves, and then your opponent has two serves.

However, if the score reaches 10-10, each player has only one serve each until the game is won by two clear points.

So if you happen to be serving last at game/match point ... all the better!

Professional players usually glue their own special rubbers on each side of the racket and different rubbers have different effects on the ball. Its regulation to have a black rubber on one side of the racket and red on the other side so that the opponent can tell what kind of rubber the player hit the ball with. (Players usually inspect their opponents rackets before the match begins to determine what kind of rubber is used on each side of their racket)
