Perhaps you are thinking of Jesus promise at the end of Matthew 28 v 20 where he said '....I am with you always even unto the end of the world.'
The context relates to the disciples carrying out what some call ' the great commission' to preach the Gospel to the whole world. Certainly Jesus would be with his followers to help them to do the job he had given them. He's saying, in effect, 'Hey, don't worry about not being up to the job I've given you - because I'll be right there.' Remember after time ends, this job of preaching and teaching expires and becomes irrelevant.
Other verses mention that He will be with His followers into eternity when time as we know it has come to an end.
2 Titus - 2 v10 - ' They may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory'.
Hebrews 13 v5 - 'I will never leave you or forsake you'.
Revelation 22 v5 - 'And there shall be no night there, and they need no candle, neither light of the sun for the Lord God gives them light and they shall reign for ever and ever'.
The answer to this depends on which Christian tradition you belong to. For all the traditions that have Apostolic claim since the times of the Apostles, such as the Holy Orthodox and all Catholics -including but not limited to Roman Catholics- the answer is simple, He died because that was the reason He came to us, for our redemption, but He came back three days later on His Resurrection, and then again for the following few weeks until Pentecost, to put His church in order.
Later, while all Christians wait for His return in a visible manner -the 2nd Coming of Christ- we DO have Him physically present with us for the past two millenia in an 'invisible' or 'hidden' manner under the appearance of bread and wine. He did promise -not in figurative language but literally- that He would never leave us, and He has NOT left us -ever! He is found wherever the Eucharist is - as the Real Presence of the Risen Christ in full glory as He sits at the right hand of the Father until the time comes to return in visible manner.
Roman Catholics even adore the Real Presence in the Eucharist in Adoration Chapels by making turns to 'keep watch with Him' for an hour, reminiscent of the Apostles whom He asked to pray with Him during his Agony in the garden prior to His arrest. This is called Eucharistic Adoration, and Perpetual Adoration when the Eucharist is exposed for adoration on a 24/7 basis throughout the year.
By the way, the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ is really present in each of both forms -the consecrated bread and wine- so that in partaking of either, one partakes of the entire Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity or Jesus Christ. In this transubstantiation, both of Jesus' full humanity and full divinity are present in the Eucharist, under the appearances of the bread and wine, after the moment of consecration by the priest. The bread is no longer bread, while the wine is no longer wine. While the Orthodox do not name this 'transubstantiation', they also believe that at the moment of consecration, the Real Presence of Jesus Christ is in the Eucharist.
Other Christian traditions, such as the Lutherans, believe in similar presence of Jesus among us, though not in the transubstantiation, but rather in the consubstantiation -meaning both the natures of the bread/wine and of Jesus Christ are present.
Anglicans and Episcopalians also believe something similar, without specifying either consubstantiation nor transubstantiation, but still believing in the Real Presence after consecration.
Therefore, depending on which Christian tradition a believer belongs to, Jesus Christ has never left us, and never will until the end of time -meaning until He returns in visible glory.

Here and now, the world is in mortal peril!!! But seriously, there's a lot of bad stuff going down. There's the global economic crisis which is starting to look like it will develop into a second great depression, there's rampant violence and unrest in the mideast, and there's the pending threat of global climate chance which, if we don't start doing something now, will destroy our planet within a couple generations (and no, no reputable scientists believe that global climate change is a hoax - only partisan politicians who are funded by big coal and big oil think that).

The most serious result of pollution would be global warming and a diminished ozone layer. Because of this the weather patterns are changing, the sun's rays are more damaging to us. The next would be the rendering our water supplies undrinkable or the depleting of fresh water sources. I think there may come a time where fresh water will be worth more than gold, and much harder to come by. The third point is not so much pollution but could mean an end to life on earth. The destruction of the world's rain forests. Most of the world's oxygen, the very air we breath is a byproduct of the rain forests. The canopy of trees and deep jungles produce our air. The bottom line is that we are killing ourselves. The protection of the ozone, running out of air and water. The outcome is dire.
