I'm assuming that it's because Fitzgerald is trying to make a severe contrast between the ridiculously large amount of people who attended Gatsby's parties and the pathetically small number of people who attended Gatsby's funeral. This contrast is likely made for the purpose of proving the shallowness of the upper class who, while they enjoyed the fabulous wealth and prestige that Gatsby possessed, found him worthless to themsevles once he was dead. Subsequently, it shows that "friendships" built on materialism do not last.

Daisy and Tom Buchanan are both connected with Nick Carraway in some way; Daisy is his cousin and Tom is a friend of his from Yale. Both are in some way unfaithful towards each other; Tom cheats on Daisy with Myrtle and Daisy is in love with Gatsby.

The breakdown of morals in society

Ive seen this book priced between 15,000 and 50,000 dollars U.S. Although when dealing with anything collectable, I think its safe to say, that its only worth what someone is willing to give you for it.

Scott Fitzgerald references 'ash grey men' - however, these are not given identities.

After the funeral, he meets Tom on the street and gets the impression that he is somehow responsible for Jay's death. The unfortunate truth is that Gatsby had no friends, he was unable to fit into the society of East Egg as he was not 'Old Money', and the society of West Egg simply enjoyed his wealth without knowing Gatsby at all.
