The real Illuminati (the word comes from the Latin for Enlightened) existed for a 10 year period between 1776-1786 in Bavaria. They were intellectuals and free thinkers. They sought a more egalitarian society and had nothing to do with satan worship, the anti-christ etc although the claims persist. Nor were they interested in becoming a shadowing, all powerful secret government - that was completely contrary to what they believed in.

The stories about the Illuminati are taken from novels. Sometimes a good story is nothing more than a story.

2012 is just another year. The idea the Illuminati have something planned is the merging of 2 conspiracy theories. The first is the Illuminati as the real power in the world and the second pulled from the misreading of the Mayan calendar. There is a persistant (and thoroughly debunked) notion the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world. Somehow the two ideas have merged into a super conspiracy.
