What does the leaf symbolize in the story the last leaf?

The last leaf is the symbol of 'hope' that empowers a person for having the strength to fight death.

Johnsy's believe that the last leaf would make her life too cease with its fall was so firm that no miraculous drug could save her against her rigidity. Behrman's wait for the right time to make his master-piece that he had fancied for so long was over the moment he realized that he had the ability to save a life by inflicting 'hope' in that person's mind.

The Last Leaf of the ivy vine had the power to sustain Johnsy's life and Berhman had the power to sustain the last leaf by creating it. This art gave Johnsy the power to sustain her 'hope' to live and indeed, until hope persists,

"it is a sin to want to die".

What is the plot of the story of the Last Leaf?

A woman nicknamed Johnsy has come down with pneumonia, and is now close to death. Outside the window of her room, the leaves fall from a vine. Johnsy decides that when the last leaf drops, she too will die, while her best friend Sue who stays with her, tries to tell her to stop thinking so pessimistically.

In the same apartment building, an elderly, frustrated artist named Behrman lives below Johnsy and Sue. Behrman has been claiming that he will paint a masterpiece, even though he has never even attempted to start. Sue visits Behrman, telling him that Johnsy, who is dying of pneumonia, is losing her will to live. Sue tells Behrman that Johnsy claims she will die when the last leaf falls off of the vine outside her window. Behrman scoffs at this as foolishness, but-as he is protective of the two young artists-he decides to visit Johnsy and see the vine from her window.

In the night, a very bad storm comes and wind is howling and rain is splattering against the window. Sue closes the curtains and tells Johnsy to go to sleep, even though there is still one leaf left on the vine. Johnsy protests against having the curtains closed, but Sue insists on doing so because she doesn't want Johnsy to see the last leaf fall. In the morning, Johnsy wants to see the vine to be sure that all the leaves are gone, but to their surprise, there is still one leaf left.

While Johnsy is surprised that it is still there, she insists it will fall that day. But it doesn't, nor does it fall through the night nor the next day. Johnsy believes that the leaf stayed there to show how wicked she was, and that she sinned in wanting to die. She regains her will to live, and makes a full recovery throughout the day.

In the afternoon, a doctor talks to Sue. The doctor says that Mr. Behrman has come down with pneumonia and, as there is nothing to be done for him, he is being taken to the hospital to be made comfortable in his final hours. A janitor had found him helpless with pain, and his shoes and clothing were wet and icy cold. The janitor couldn't figure out where he had been on that stormy night, though she had found a lantern that was still lit, a ladder that had been moved, some scattered brushes, and a palette with green and yellow colors mixed on it. "Look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn't you wonder why it never fluttered or moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it's Behrman's masterpiece - he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell."

What is the plot of the last leaf?

A young girl by the name of Johnsy has fallen ill and is dying of pneumonia. She watches the leaves fall from a vine outside the window of her room, and decides that when the last leaf drops, she too will "drop," and die. While Sue tries to tell her to stop thinking like that, Johnsy is determined to die when the last leaf falls.

An old French man, named Behrman, is a frustrated artist who lives nearby and is Sue's tutor, and who has been claiming that he will paint a masterpiece, even though he has never even attempted to start. Sue goes to him, and tells him that her sister is dying of pneumonia, and that Johnsy claims that when the last leaf falls off of a vine outside her window, she will die. Behrman scoffs at this as foolishness, but decides to see Johnsy and the vine.

In the night, a very bad storm comes and wind is howling and rain is splattering against the window. Sue closes the curtains and tells Johnsy to go to sleep, even though there were still four leaves left on the vine. Johnsy protests but Sue insists on doing so because doesn't want Johnsy to see the last leaf fall. In the morning, Johnsy wants to see the vine, to be sure that all the leaves are gone, but to their surprise, there is still one leaf left.

While Johnsy is surprised that it is still there, she insists it will fall that day. But it doesn't, nor does it fall through the night nor the next day. In the afternoon, a doctor comes and talks to Sue. The doctor says that Mr. Behrman had died of pneumonia an hour ago, and that he was ill only 2 days. How is O Henry's The Last Leaf having a surprise ending?

Johnsy and Sue are artists who move into Greenwich Village in New York City. As Winter approaches and the weather gets colder, Johnsy becomes ill with pneumonia. She gets so sick that she believes that when the last leaf falls from the vine outside her window, she will die.

In the end the girls realized that the last leaf that still hung was a painting. They realised that the old artist, named Mr. Behrman, who lived in the same building as the girls, braved a storm one night to secretly paint a leaf on the wall - a leaf that would never fall, inspiring the young girl, Johnsy, to mentally fight her illness. Cold and wet from painting in the icy rain, he caught pneumonia and died.

Johnsy, whose condition was deteriorating daily, had given up on life but when she saw, that following morning, that the last leaf did not fall during that very stormy night, she stopped despairing about her illness and recovered completely.

The twist or surprise ending ( a technique that O. Henry is famous for ) was the final realization that the last leaf was not real but a painting which seemed to have a magical healing power that renewed Johnsy's will to live and to defeat her pneumonia.

The old adage, " Life follows art " applies to this short story. Perhaps, also "Mind over matter ", in her case as well.
