Why is Anastasia Romanov daughter of the last Russian Czar who was murdered along-with her family in the 1917 Russian Revolution so sought after in World History?

Seeking Anastasia is a romantic notion that takes some of the harshness from the reality of the true story. For the better part of the twentieth century following the Russian Revolution, life in Russia, the Soviet Union and the better part of Europe between WWI and WWII and immediately following were difficult and uncertain socially and economically. Until the use of DNA for positive identification came into use, there was no real harm in the fantasy that Anastasia be could found alive.

What is the legend of Anastasia?

On July 17, 1918, the Romanovs were lead to the basement of the Ipatiev House, a mansion in Ekaterinburg, Russia where they were held as prisoners. Bolshevik soldiers under the command of Yakov Yurovsky, were their prison guards. The Bolsheviks worked for the new Communist government that had been established after Nicholas was forced into advocating the throne. They were lead downstairs under the notion that fighting had broken out in the city and they were being taken to the basement to wait for a truck to take them to safety. The family was told to pose for a picture before they left and Yurovsky, a photographer before joining the Bolshevik army, moved them into place. Forty minutes later, a truck could be heard outside, but it wasn't meant to take them to safety, but rather to carry away their dead bodies. Yurovsky read aloud the death sentence, and fired point blank into the Tsar's chest three times. The rest of the firing was random and sloppily done. Slowly, the prisoners began to die, however, the four daughters were proving hard to kill. It turned out that they had sewn the family jewels into their blouses and they acted as bullet proof vests. The girls were eventually stabbed to death or struck in the heads. However, it was believed that one of them only pretended to be dead. The youngest daughter, Anastasia. She managed to escape through the assistance of a friendly guard, possibly Anatoly Yakimov. You won't find a lot about him, but he seems to be possibly the only guard that did not hate the Romanovs. However, that is only a hunch. All that is known is that she supposedly escaped through the help of a sympathetic guard. She made her way to Germany and undertook the name Anna Anderson. She was eventually put in a mental hospital after trying to kill herself, and later came out to the press that she was Anastasia Romanov. There was a lot of conflict over who she really was. Some said she was the real deal, others called her an imposter. Her story became the basis of many books and movies, and shined a lot of light on the Romanov family. When the bodies of the family were found after the fall of the Soviet Union, Anastasia's body was nowhere to be found, and the world turned to Anna Anderson's story once again. Sadly, this story is a fake. The real Anastasia died alongside her family. Her body was found a few years later and was eventually laid to rest alongside the rest of her family and declared a Saint in the Russian Orthodox Church. Her body is laid to rest at the Church of All Saints, built on the site where the Ipatiev House used to stand.

What evidence did Anna Anderson use to try to prove she was Anastasia?

There was never any evidence that she herself gave or used that could have proven that she was Anastasia. All she had was the story that she told about how the night the royal family was killed a man resued her, brought her to Bucharest raped her got her pregnant and then was killed. She claimed she went to Berlin to tell her family she was alive, but suposedly got nervous and decided to end her life instead. The story however was not true.

What happened to Alexei Romanov?

Alexei Romanov was murdered along with the rest of his family, doctor and servants. The report of the killing by Yakov Yurovsky , who was in command of the detail that kept the Romano vs in custody has been found and it clearly states that all, even young Alexei, of the Romanovs were shot and buried. In addition, there is an eyewitness report by one of the guards, Pavel Medvedev, confirming that Alexei was killed.

After several months in custody of the Bolsheviks, Alexei was suffering badly and in great pain because of his hemophilia. He could not walk on his own at the time.He likely would have died soon anyway. The only way he could have survived is if the Bolsheviks, who murdered every other member of his family, actively cared for him to keep him alive. Now why would they do that?

The most compelling reason to disbelieve any story that he survived is to realize that the murder of Alexei was the second most important murder of all of the Romanovs, even that of Alexandra. Once Nicholas II was dead, Alexei had the right to succeed to the throne. The only way to ensure that no Romanov ever again became Tsar was to kill the entire family, but Nicholas and the Tsarevich had to go first before the women. There was no way the Bolsheviks would have allowed Alexei to live.

Why did Anastasia romanov get killed?

Anastasia Romanov was killed purely because she was a Romanov. When the Bolsheviks eventually came to power after Tsar Nicholas abdicated, Lenin ordered that Nick and his family were to be killed to end the Romanov dynasty and family line.

Why did the Bolsheviks want the romanov family dead?
