I am not positive but I believe it is supposed to be during the second world war. I saw the movie when I was little like 35 years ago and if memory serves me it is WWII. It takes place in Europe when England started fighting Germany yes I believe that was the reason the nanny, Julie Andrews, was hired. The dad had to go to war.

For those not paying attention, this was when Nazi Germany took over Austria to "re-unite" the German lands. Austria had been a separate country. Hence all the boo-hoo by Captain Von Trapp about being Austrian. Were you watching the film??? Did you pay attention at school? If you saw it 35 years ago, you must have been born in about 1970. So surely you know a little more about the period leading up to the World War II?
