In 1919, after the third Anglo-Afghan war (between the British who were occupying India) Afghanistan declared its independence and became an official nation-state. In 1893 (I think) The Durand Treaty was signed which partitioned off nearly half of the Pashtun population (the dominant group know as the "true Afghans" who were also the ruling party). This created what is now known as Pakistan. The Taliban, a fundamentalist group from the resistance arose from the civil war claiming peace and order, and swept in, neutralizing any resistance with very little bloodshed, The Taliban fell in 2001, due to U.S. involvement.
