Symbols can be interpreted in any way you want, but here's my (and my English teacher's) opinion. We believe that Spectre symbolises the American Dream, as it is hard to achieve, but when you achieve it, there is nothing left to do. We should all aim to be like Norther Winslow (not robbing banks, obviously) but not conforming to the status quo. He got so much more out of life than he would have in Spectre. Just look at his poem; The grass so green / The sky so blue / Spectre is so great! That got him nowhere, but it wasn't until he escaped Spectre that he managed to really enjoy himself.
