When did the twizzlers come out?
The first licorice candy was created in Holland sometime during 1770~1844.
Sometime after licorice root was brought to Europe during the late Roman Empire(1358).
The root was brought for medicinal purposes against stomach pains.
In 1731 Giorgio Amarelli formed a method to liquefy the licorice root itself and since then it has been used into cough syrup.
Due to this method and other inventions the real licorice known today has got it shape and size.
It is unknown exactly where this whole process took place and who did what.
But according to the Dutch somewhere between 1770-1844 licorice was invented.
And still eaten today.
Perhaps Holland is the only country in the world where they have well over a 1000 different kinds of licorice.

i do not think there is a reason for it being red but red does seem to get peoples attention better than other colors but that is only my opinion.

How do Twizzlers get their shape?
A search on the internet will not reveal the "magic" of making a Twizzler's traditional shape. However, if you examine Twizzler very carefully (this is the Scientific methd) its method of manufacture becomes apparent.
A Twizzler is a long tube of soft(ish) candy, slightly flattened on the bottom with a spiral ridge coiled around its length and two squished flat ends. There is often a seam along the sides adjacent to the flat bottom.
The shape is similar to spaghetti or more specifically a combination of rotini and penne. So we start our assumption with the thought that the candy mixture is extruded from a die to give us the hollow tube.
The tube is likely passed through two revolving molds which impart the spiral twists and the side seams (where the two moulds meet) and cools the mixture enough so it doesn't sag into a candy rope when released.
The cooled continuous rope is cut off as it emerges from the mold squishing the ends flat and falls onto a conveyor belt. The cooling Twizzers ride the belt cooling even more but sagging a bit to give the flat bottom.

They are okay for vegans. Some people thought the glycerine was questionable because it can come from animal or vegetable sources. However, twizzler has confirmed as of aug 2010 that they do, in fact, use a vegetable sourced glycerin. You should be good! If you're worried about red#40, it is not from animal sources, but is actually petroleum based, as opposed to red#4, which is made from crushed up beetle shells, I believe - and crushed up bugs just don't qualify as vegan.
