Vincent van Gogh cut off one of his ears because he had had an argument with one of his friends. The argument may have been whether Paul Gauguin was going to leave Arles, where they had been working together.

It is believed that he cut his left earlobe off December 24, 1888 during some kind of seizure. This took place in Arles (France) when Van Gogh was 35.

Van Gogh had left for Arles in the hopes of turning it into an artists' haven and had convinced Gauguin to join him. Vincent had spent all the money his brother Theo had given him on art supplies, so when Gauguin arrived he was in a malnourished state. Still, the men got on, working well together but frequently having arguments about art and techniques. As the weather worsened they were forced to stay indoors with each other for longer and longer periods of time and their arguments worsened. Vincent's mental state declined, possibly due to cabin fever, possibly due to poor nutrition, possibly due to stress relating to his generally failed attempt at creating an artists' community. Probably all three combined with a personality that tended to the over zealous.

Vincent Van Gogh faced challenges like: thinking he was a bother to his brother, cutting his ear off, and surviving bleeding to death for 2 whole dies before eve tually dieing.

A bit of additional information worth considering:

Mr. Van Gogh`s biggest challenge as an artist was an arguable lack of talent, especially when compared to many of his contemporaries. In the eyes of many, his art from beginning to end showed an amateurish quality typical of many beginning painters and of schoolchildren, with his fame based more on his ill fated association with his roommate, Paul Gauguin, and the greatly exaggerated self-mutilation as a result of this attempted relationship. Even "gay Paree", in those days, did not openly accept gay realtionships between men.

In any case, Mr. Van Gogh's ultimate challenge was the pschosis that developed from these challenges (his inability to match up to his contemporaries, and his attraction to Mr. Gauguin), resulting in his suicidal death at the age of 37.

Today, he would likely have faired better - at least in love, if not in art.

Vincent was born twice. A year to the day before the famous one, another Vincent van Gogh was born in 1852, stillborn. Also, Vincent's brother named his first and only child Vincent. Vincent was a strong family name, there were also grandparents, and grand uncles named Vincent.

Van Gogh actually shot himself in the stomach, which is a horrible slow way to kill oneself. It is also theorized that some of Vincents mental problems were brought on or worsened by the fact that all of the paints he used contained lead which can pool in the brain, and he was known to taste all of his paints to ensure they were up to his standards. After shooting himself in the stomach he dragged himself through a cornfeild back to the inn he lived and waited for help as a cry for attention yes he did GOD KILLED HIM

He was never sure about what he desired to do. At first he became an assistant to an art dealer and then later he put his all into becoming a pastor. However because he was so self sacrificing he was found to be uncongenial to the ones in higher order. After this his brother Theo suggested he study to become an artist reminding him of his enjoyment in younger years of sketching the landscapes around their home. Theo financed him in this direction.
