A Catholic Answer
The above answerer suggests that opinions are more certain than facts in matters of religion. It seems to me that the New Testament does present us with a few facts about Mary, and that from these it may be possible to draw some inferences. Such inferences should be grounded in a solid knowledge of the land and culture of first century Jewish Palestine in which Mary lived, and should also hew close to the texts.
First, from Saint Luke's account of the Annunciation, we can infer that Mary was a woman of great faith, for she received the angel's visit and assented to his proposal, which, in her time and culture she must have known would cost her dearly; Joseph nearly divorced Mary when her pregnancy was discovered. But faith believes that God will find a way to bring the things He promised to fruition.
We may infer that she was a woman of great love, for when she learned that her cousin Elizabeth (who was on in years) was with child, Mary hastened to visit her to assist her. Based on the Biblical texts, the distance Mary had to travel was some seventy miles on foot or by pack animal over difficult and dangerous terrain, with highwaymen waiting to assault travellers. Mary could have rested at home. After all, she was to be the mother of the Promised One. But love does not rest at home when others are in need.
We may infer that Mary was a woman of great hope, for the Gospel accounts of the Crucifixion of Jesus, place Mary at the foot of the Cross, watching her Son die in agony. Many mothers could not have withstood such an experience. But according the the gospel of Saint Matthew, Mary was not only there on Good Friday, she was one of the women at the tomb of Jesus on Easter Sunday to assist with performing the Jewish burial rituals for his body. Hope gives a person strength to face the unthinkable.

Mary had no husband or children other than Jesus. Jesus respected Jewish law and would not have broken the law regarding the care of his mother. A husband or other child would have had the responsibility to care for Mary.

During Jesus' mission Mary and her other children featured several times (eg at the wedding in Cana, Galilee, the site of jesus' first miracle) and she also appears again when Jesus was crucified, being one of the spectators and mourners at the foot of the cross. We know that John, the most beloved disciple of Jesus, then took her into his home to care for her in her old age. The Roman Catholic Church, however, has developed over the years many other doctrines surrounding Mary such as the immaculate conception, the perpetual virginal state of Mary, her bodily assumption into heaven, her place as a special intermediary between God and humanity and many other doctrines surrounding her nature as 'Blessed Mother Mary'. In addition the Catholic Church has developed a history of where Mary was born, the names and nature of her parents, grandparents and so on. However, all these doctrines and beliefs are merely either Catholic invention or Catholic tradition, and have no real substance historically, scripturally or archaeologically.

Was the Blessed Virgin Mary a virgin after Jesus died?

Another viewpointWhereas Roman Catholics, Eastern Catholics, and Eastern Orthodox Christians believe in the continual virginal state of the Virgin Mary as part of their general veneration of her, almost no other denomination has this belief. Roman Catholic, Eastern Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox Christian doctrine is primarily formulated by the traditions and teachings of their Churches with scripture being regarded as only partly necessary for the formation of doctrine.In most Protestant denominations, however, scripture (ie the Bible) is taken more seriously as a basis for doctrine. In scripture, there are several passages that speak of Jesus' siblings where brothers and sisters are mentioned by name (eh Judas, James, Salome etc).
Of course, Catholics will claim that these people were jesus' cousinsor other relatives. However, the original Greek of the passages and the context of the text point categorically to Jesus having biological siblings, born naturally from Marywhich means that her 'perpetual virginal state' is total fabrication.
Therefore while the virgin birth of Jesus is a necessary belief of both Catholics and protestants to understand the Incarnation, and hence salvation, the continued virginal state of Mary is seen by protestants as contrary to scripture and therefore has no basis in fact.

Did Mary die or ascend into heaven?
On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII, of happy memory, issued his Apostolic Constitution, MUNIFICENTISSIMUS DEUS DEFINING THE DOGMA OF THE ASSUMPTION. In that constitution, he carefully defined what Catholics always believed about the Blessed Virgin Mary, that, at the end of her life, she was assumed body and soul into heaven. At that time there were two schools of thought in the Church, one was called the immortalists, who believed that Our Blessed Lady fell asleep at the end of her life and was assumed into heaven. The other school was the mortalists, who believed that Our Blessed Lady, in imitation of her Son, died, and slept in death for three days, at which time her body as assumed into heaven and re-united with her soul. In Munificentissimus Deus, Pope Pius XII, with all the authority given to him as the Vicar of Christ, solemnly proclaimed that Our Lady was assumed into heaven. As to the how (mortalists vs. immmortalists) he solemnly proclaimed - nothing. Because we don't know, and it isn't important. That fact is that she ended her mortal life on earth (which the Orthodox call The Dormition (or falling asleep) and was assumed into heaven. How this happened, we will know after we die, but the important thing is that Our Lady is alive right now in heaven, body and soul, and that she cares for you and prays for you every time that you ask. We don't know if Our Blessed Lady died or just ended her life. We do know that, because of her Immaculate Conception, and the fact that she never sinned, her body never suffered corruption, and was assumed into heaven, where she reigns right now. The Blessed Virgin Mary most definitely did NOT ascend into heaven, she was not God, and was incapable of such a thing, God assumed her into heaven, there is a world of difference.
