Why is Raleigh named after sir Walter Raleigh?

Elizabeth I knighted him in 1585.

"Sir" is the mode of address given to a knight. It is an abbreviation of the French word "seigneur" meaning Lord. Knighthoods are the title above the common people but below the nobility. Historically they meant that the person held his land by "knight service" to the king, i.e. they provided military service when required. After feudal times, knight service lapsed but knighoods continued to be given by the king as a mark of approval, initially after a battle in which the person had "won their spurs" but more recently for any service given to the state of the United Kingdom.

Why did queen Elizabeth like sir Walter Raleigh?

Queen Elizabeth 1 didn't send him to find a colony. Raleigh put together and invested in the Roanoke Voyages, though. He did travel to South America, but he did not travel himself to North America.

Sir Walter Raleigh was responsible for what settlement?

Concerning settlements in North America, Ralegh sponsored, along with other investors, and organized the first two of the four Roanoke voyages. The first was in 1584 and the second in 1585. The two voyages were mainly reconnaissance expeditions and consisted of men only. The third voyage was in 1587 and consisted of men, women and boys. It was the only one of the first three voyages that truly attempted settlement in the New World. It took place on Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina. It was a failure. Ralegh did not sponsor the settlement voyage. He had sold his interests to others and he merely lent his name to the organization of the expedition. The fourth voyage in 1590 was an attempt to find out what had happened to the 1587 settlers. No trace was found other than two somewhat cryptic clues carved into a tree and a palisade. Ralegh did not accompany any of the voyages and his only trips to the Americas were to South America.
