Why is the whale shark in the phylum of chordata?

To answer the question in the simplest way, the giraffe has a backbone.

However, there is more to it than that, especially given that there are two invertebrate chordate groups - Urochordata (tunicates) and Cephalachordata (lancelets) - whose backbone is not in the form of actual vertebrae.

As Chordates (or members of the phylum Chordata), giraffes share the following characteristics:

  • dorsal nerve cord which is a bundle of nerve fibres which runs down the back. It connects the brain with the lateral muscles and other organs.
  • notochord which is a cartilaginous rod running underneath, and supporting, the nerve cord - in the case of the giraffe, a spine.
  • post-anal tail - an extension of the body past the anal opening. (This feature is not always present in some adult Chordates such as frogs and humans, but it is present in the giraffe.)
  • Pharyngeal pouches - Chordates, at some stage of their life, have pharyngeal grooves and pouches that develop into other essential parts of their anatomy.

Whale shark swim speed?

A whale shark will eventually outswim you, but why bother? They do about 3 mph / 5 Km/h / 3.15 knots. The good news is that they're not interested in people anyway.

I'm going OT here...

We all know about The great white, (but like unmusty, unhassled elephants) they're usually human-friendly.

The two to be scared of, are the bull shark (which will nudge you before biting your arm off) and the tiger shark which won't!

Anyway, I don't want to scare people about those species, so I'll mention that the white tipped shark has a higher kill-rate on humans than any other species.

So the next time you put a plecostomus in your fish tank or buy "rock haddock" at a fish and chip shop, don't let it bite you. It's a shark!

Whale sharks primarily feed on plankton, small fish, and other tiny marine organisms, making them filter feeders. They occupy a niche at the top of the food chain as large predators, but they primarily rely on abundant prey rather than hunting larger animals.
