whaling should be banned because they are Beautiful creatures that are becoming extinct because of us humans be on the other hand they are used for a lot of things. Very few whales of every kind are left. We should protect them.

Not hurt them.

teeth- piano keys,buttons,jewelry

sinews- used for tennis raquets

liver-oil

oil-sperm whale oil taken from bone and skin used for high grade alcohol, shoe cream, lipstick, ointment, crayons, candles, fertilizer, soap, and animal feed

skin- belts, shoes, bags

baleen- umbrellas, horse whips, shoehorn

We can see whales do have a practical use when it comes to using their remnants to create objects to aid us.

Anti-whaling campaigners say that whales are amongst the most intelligent of mammals and it is therefore morally wrong to kill them for food. Most of the research on mammal intelligence has been carried out on Bottle nose dolphins and while they scored highly in some research, it is nearly impossible to duplicate these tests for whales, probably due to the fact their numbers are so small.

With that said, the campaigners must have little evidence as to a whale's intelligence.

I will try to be unbiased in my answer, whaling should be banned because it is causing whale to become endangered and could lead to their extinction, this would be bad because whales fill a niche in the ocean that if left open by their extinction, could have drastic and harmful effects on the ocean's ecosystem

Why is whaling cruel?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They shot the defensless animal full of harpoons and then they kill it.

edit:

Actually the shooting the animals typically kills them in one shot. Whales are not completely defenseless either, they can do considerable damage to medium sized boats by surfacing and landing on the vessel. It is no more cruel than how cows are slaughtered. Usually it's a near instantaneous kill, hardly ever requiring more than a single blow.

What do whaling captains wives do when they are at sea?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When Whaling Captain's wives are at sea, they do what every wife does when she accompanies her husband on a journey.

They tell him what to do, not to get dirty, not to look at other sailor´s wives, which course to steer and which whale to fire their harpoons at.

Naturally they also complain about the rolling of the ship, the bad food, the rats, the smell of the rotting whales, the sea, the wind, the seagulls making too much noise at 0300 and so on.

This is why captains usually try to leave their wives at home when going whaling. There they can re-arrange the house, get a boyfriend, spend the money their husbands brought home from the last journey, meet other captain´s wifes, get drunk in the evening and do crochet and embroidery.

Do we still use commercial whaling?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Most countries have banned it thanks to an international treaty. However, Japan still whales on a scale large enough that there are even a few sushi restaurants in the USA that serve whale meat. The Japanese say that the whaling is only for scientific research, but if that is the case, why is whale meat being served in restaurants? Bob Barker, the retired host of "The Price is Right," funds a ship called the "Sea Shepherd" that travels to Antarctica and fights against Japanese whalers. There is a reality show on Animal Planet about it, called "Whale Wars."

What did the Makah American Indians do that was so shocking and what was their reasoning?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

They asserted their right to hunt whales based on their oral history of whaling being part of their past culture. Whaling by the Makah was suspended earlier because commercial whaling had depleted whale stocks so much. They also asserted that their right to hunt whales was guaranteed by treaty with the US government.

The 1855 Treaty of Neah Bay, states in part: "The right of taking fish and of whaling or sealing at usual and accustomed grounds and stations is further secured to said Indians in common with all citizens of the United States."

They have not only asserted the right but have followed through by taking at least one whale since courts confirmed their right to do so.

Why was whaling banned in new zealand?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Whaling and sealing are considered unacceptable commercial activities in new Zealand.

Because it is considered that the Cetacea are of high intelligence, and thus deserve protecting.

However whales or other Cetacea that become beached irretrievably are humanely put down and buried. The bones of these unfortunates are often recovered, especially for carving by Maori.

Does the antarctic treaty address whaling?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The antarctic treaty, which now has 46 nations in it, has 2 main organisations that deal with whaling. Although the treaty do address the Japanese whaling, the main 2 organisations are Greenpeace and Sea Sheperd. These 2 organisations aim to fight the whaling in Antarctica going to many extents.

Sorry I didn't help but if you can get your hands on a book name "Oxford Big Ideas Humanities 2" it has a whole chapter on Antarctica and also about the treaty.
