Wicca

Wicca is a belief system introduced by Gerald Gardner in the 1950's and loosely based on the reconstruction of pre-Christian traditions. Wicca is a spiritual path that affirms the existence of supernatural powers (magic) and of both male and female gods who are inherent in nature. All practitioners of Wicca are witches, but not all witches are practitioners of Wicca. Wicca refers to the recognized religion but is not the sole example of pagan beliefs. The one discernible difference between Wicca and other various pagan paths is the practitioners strict adherence to the Wiccan Rede.

What are the most common wiccan rituals?

There is the full moon ritual (called an Esbatt), performed every full moon by lighting candles , one for each element, One for each deity, and thanking them for what they provide us with.

Some traditions celebrate the New Moon as well, (also called an Esbatt) and the ritual is similar to a Full Moon Esbatt, except that this is the time to start new projects and ask the elements and deities for their assistance with them.

There are also 8 "high holidays" (call Sabbats), performed on (or around):

- February 2nd (called Imbolc, Candlemas, Bridget's Day)

- March 21st (called Ostara, Eoster, Vernal Equinox)

- May 1st (called Beltane, Lady's Day, May Day)

- June 21st (called Litha, Midsummer, Summer Solstice)

- August 1st (call Lammas, First Harvest, Lughnasadh)

- September 21st (called Mabon, Autumnal Equinox)

- October 31st (called Samhain, All Hallows)

- December 21st (called Yule, Midwinter, Winter Solstice)

These rituals mark the turning of the "Year Wheel", the seasons. They are holiday specific in celebration, and vary from tradition to tradition.

How long do you have to wait after beginning to study wicca to become a witch?

You do need to be a member of a coven to be a witch, or be initiated by someone higher up. There are some reputable books on the subject of solitary witches, and how to make the most of your Practice when you are on your own (after all, it is not uncommon to be the "only wiccan in the village." However one needs to be intiated by a lineaged Wiccan, and then leave the coven to be a solitary wiccan. Furthermore it is traditional to wait a year and a day before initiation.

I urge you to continue your study of Wicca. If you are drawn to the Lord and Lady and are most comfortable with a religion which honors fertility and sex, then as your actions naturally align themselves with the tenets of Wicca, then you are not quite a witch yet. You still need to be initiated.

How is the star of David used in wicca?

The Jewish star of David is not used in Wicca. The Wiccan pentagram and the star of David are slightly different in appearance.

The pentagram stands on two legs and each point represents spirit, earth, air, water, and fire.

The star of David stands on one leg, and has six points in stead of five.

The six pointed star, Solomon's Seal or Hexagram (sometimes called the "Star of David") is in fact used in paganism. It has only been associated with the Jewish faith since the 17th century. Before that it was a commonly used symbol to dispel evil.

Do wiccans sacirfice?

NO, of course not, Wiccans believe in the law of three, which states that if you do something wrong or hurt someone that you will be punished in your next life or this life three times as strong as what you did. We don't hurt people of animals, we don't fly on broom sticks or consort with the devil (which is a Cristian Creation, we don't believe in him under any name, we don't need a being of supreme evil to bully us into doing whats right) of demons. lots of us are vegetarian's, like me.

A Pagan Perspective

To clear up a few of the thinks said above...

The "Rule of Three" states "That which you send out will return to you threefold." There is no time frame set on it.

However the belief that you will be punished in a future life is tied up with the concepts of reincarnation and karma. These concepts are part of some, but not all, of the spiritual paths that fall under the broad umbrella that is Paganism.

The Wiccan Rede, which states "An it harm none, do as thou will" is part of the Wiccan spiritual path. Not all Pagans follow this.

Sacrifice, the killing of living organisms, is fairly uncommon.

We do, on occasion, cut plants, flowers, etc to decorate our altars, circles, sacred spaces and homes or as part of rituals and spells.

We do sacrifice our time, our energies, our resources for the work we do, our family, our friends, etc. both for spiritual work and in the name of simple friendship.

Blood sacrifice is very uncommon but not unheard of. There are a few spiritual paths under the Paganism umbrella that do in fact use blood in their rituals, but again I stress, it is uncommon.

Some, but not all, Pagans are vegetarians, as some, but not all, vegetarians are Pagan. Both are personal lifestyle choices, not necessarily connected to one another.

Are there any wiccans in India?

Yes. There are many, the Dakini Vidya form of witchcraft is widely practiced. Similar to Wicca, it involves invoking the Mother Goddess to draw spiritual strength. Unfortunately, because of a lack of education and literacy and also because of fundamentalist bigotry, witches are still today being persecuted and killed.

Ipsita Roy Chakraverti , a prominent practicing Wiccan and social activist in India, has organized a Wiccan Brigade to document the hundreds of cases of abuse and murders from 2001 to present. With the help of police and Universities across the country, more than 100 people including some fundamentalist missionaries have been charged with various crimes against "witches".

It is worth noting that several websites in India use Exodus 22:18 to advocate religiously based genocide, openly teaching "thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" and that the "wiccan brigade" has been specifically targeted.

The links provided detail some of the efforts to remedy this problem.

How many members are does wicca have today?

There is a difference between Wicca and the other branches of Paganism, contrary to popular belief. As a whole, the religious branch of Paganism has thousands, I'm pretty sure millions, of people following its peaceful guidelines worldwide. As a Witch, I'm unsure of my Wiccan cousins, but I'm sure we're pretty much equal in our ranks. ~.^

How do you do wicca?

Depending on the "sect", Wiccans can operate in covens or as solitary practitioners (or both). Some have formal initiations and training regimes, some don't. Try to find one in your area and see what they tell you.

However, Wicca doesn't require you to belong to any specific group. If you agree with the philosophy and engage in the practices, you are a Wiccan. Though, many people might wonder why you would even choose Wicca.

Is there anyone who has information on what faeries would have to do with wicca religion My sister inlaw is into the whole wicca thing and always gives my daughter fairie stuff?

Well Wicca is a religion basically based on belief in a lot of mysterious deep things. I myself find that I am into faerie things and impossibilities. I believe it is just the way of being into things that other people don't really believe in.

It may also have to do with the fact that faeries first came about in Celtic stories and Celtic people were very much into Wicca. Wicca is, a lot of the time, tied in with mystical creatures and such because Wicca is the "witch" religion.
