Most practitioners of the Craft have a book or in some cases several books containing their own personal spells. These books are commonly called Grimoires. Some are called Books of Shadows.
The practitioner writes in them, outlining such things as timing - the phase, and house the moon is in; planetary alignments; the day and hour to cast the spell; herbs, oils, elixirs, incenses, stones/gems, and other needful things.
They also include the purpose and wording of the spell, and in some cases the outcome of the spell.
To acquire such a book is to have the beginnings of a very powerful set of spells, but as magic is VERY individual, and each of us is different in our style, power and sensitivities, each of those spells will have to be adjusted, altered and tailored to the practitioner casting it and the subject it is being cast for/on.

Why do witches have familiars?
Familiars are believed to be a physical embodiment of a spirit guide and/or an intermediary between worlds. I personally feel that the concept of familiars is a stereotype. I don't discount that it is possible for a spirit to take the form of an animal and act as a guide or intermediary for a witch but television and books have purported this notion to the point of it being stereotypical. A familiar could be a cat but could also just as easily be a lady bug. The majority of newbie witches feel the need to go out and get a cat name it salem and call it a familiar because they are uneducated as to what it a familiar actually is and are trying to fit into what they have been told a witch is supposed to be. I have been a witch my entire life and have yet to have a "familiar" in the sense that the world thinks of them as. I don't even particularly like cats. I'm more of a bird person.

Spells can and do go wrong or fail to work at all for a number of reasons. Wrong timing (working within the correct phase and house of the moon). wrong ingredients (magical substitutions can be very tricky), wrong motives (trying to do spells that is designed to effect anyone but yourself are often doomed for ethical reasons), are just the most obvious ones. Check your heart, check your research, check your book of shadows, you will most likely find your problem.
Nor will they ever my friend, nor will they ever. It is impossible to put a spell upon anyone. The only way that such an evil practice might work is if the person is so weak minded they they come to believe that a spell has been put upon them.
If you think that you are able to put spell upon people then Satan has put a spell upon you, and it is you who are the weak in mind for believing so.

There really is no answer to the oft heard question; "What is the difference between Black Magic and White Magic?" or "Are you a good witch or a bad witch." Fact is the magical energies we use are very much like other forms of power.What most people do not understand is that Magic is simply the manipulation of naturally occurring energies by the will and hand of a (hopefully) ethical practitioner.
To help me futher answer this question I will use electricity as a mundane corollary. The energy itself is neither good nor bad. It is in its use that polarity can be attributed. When electricity is used to cook food, heat homes and light the darkness it is perceived as good. When it is used to torture people, damage things or kill someone, then it is perceived as bad or evil. The energy itself is neither, it simply is. In the same way, magical energies are simply there. It is how we draw upon and use the energies that determine how they are perceived.
