Can you be allergic to lambs wool but not wool?

Answer

Wool only comes from lamb. However, if they make the wool in to thread or in some other form you may not be allergic to store wool and just the lamb's wool.Answer

Yes, lambs carry other nutrients and things on their skin. But these are combed out of the wool as it is being processed and made into fabric.

Answer

If you are allergic to a substance it means that you are producing an immune response to that substance. To produce an immune responce your body must be sensitized and be able to "recognise" the particular substance which is acting as an allergen. As sheep and lambs are the same creature at different stages of their life cycle there should be no difference in the chemical composition of the wool or lubricating secreations present. Problems may arise however in the chemicals used to treat lambs wool and sheep wool before it is made into a garment. So no, it is not possible to have an allergy to lambs and not sheeps wool but it is possible that they are treated with different chemicals and you may be allergic to one of these.

If however the "wool" you are refering to is from a different species such as a llama, you may be allergic to lambs wool but not llama wool.

How do you unshrink wool?

Everyone has had the experience of accidentally washing a wool sweater. When wool gets wet and warm, the fibers in the wool lock themselves together and don't want to let go, resulting in shrinkage (you can get wool warm or wet, but not both). Read on to try to remedy the problem.

Difficulty: Easy * Tubs * Hair conditioner * Water * Sodium borate * Vinegar * Towels == Soak the garment in a tub with a mixture of hair conditioner and water. Gently pull the sweater to reshape.

== Try another method if that doesn't work: Dissolve one ounce of sodium borate (borax) in a couple of tablespoons of hot water, add the mixture to a gallon of lukewarm water, immerse the garment and pull gently into shape. Rinse in a gallon of warm water with 2 tbsp. vinegar.

== Soak the garment in warm water with a mild soap for about 10 minutes to unlock the fibers in the wool. Lay the garment out on some towels in a cool place but don't rinse. You can roll it up in the towel to absorb the excess water.

== Then stretch the garment out to its original dimensions. The stretching (also called blocking) pulls the unlocked wool fibers away from one another.

== Allow the garment to dry for any of the methods mentioned above. * Watch for the symbol for "superwash," which indicates that the wool product can be successfully machine-washed using a mild detergent and then machine-dried. Relatively new techniques have been developed to improve wool's washability by making the fiber more resistant to felting and shrinkage. * Avoid using any heat ' from a dryer, radiator, hairdryer and so on ' to dry the sweater you are trying to unshrink. The absence of heat from the drying process allows the wool fibers to set in place without locking together and shrinking the garment again.

Why is shahtoosh wool banned?

Shahtoosh (also written Shahtush, a Persian word meaning "king of fine wools") is the name given to a specific kind of shawl, which is woven with the down hair of the Tibetan Antelope (Chiru), by the weavers of Kashmir. The Chiru antelope live in one of the harshest environments on earth, at an altitude of over 5,000 metres. Their special type of down fur, which is both very light and warm, allows them to survive in the freezing conditions of the plateau where they gather at one point of the year. They are migratory animals - moving down from Mongolia to Tibet- and traditionally followed closely by the nomads who also make that journey every year. The nomads would hunt the antelope for all that it provided them - hide, meat, bones, horns and fur pelts - in short, everything that the nomads needed to sustain them through their journey.t is a long-perpetuated false claim, that nomads gathered Chiru down from rocks and bushes, after it was naturally shed.

The nomads had no use at all for the soft down - its incredible fineness making it virtually impossible to handle - and this is where the weavers of Kashmir played their role. With their experience in handling the finest hand-combed Pashmina wool, they could weave shawls of the most exquisite quality, and thus the Shahtoosh shawl was born.

Why do you use wool?

Wool is a natural fibre, obtained from several animals. To qualify as wool, rather than hair, it should be fine and have a crinkly appearance.

Wool usually comes from sheep or (angora) goats. The fineness of the fibre (down to <10 microns) and its crinkle are the most valued. The inner coat of a dog, in winter is quite wooly, but less so for cats.

Similar fibre is obtained from Alpacas, and Vicuna (the finest). Once these various fibres have been cleaned, they will last for very many years.

Wool may be spun into a longer fibre, dyed, woven, and felted.
