How do you stiffen wool fabric for roman blinds?

This one is easy - though I am here as I have the opposite problem!

I bought a bottle of Pretty Frills Blind Company Fabric Stiffening Solution at Dunelm Mill (UK retailer) for just £4.89. You dilute it with water in a bowl, dip the fabric in for a couple of minutes, remove and hang to dry. Then just iron it.

However, I would recommend diluting it more than it says, and don't pour over the remaining liquid as it dries thinking it will help even more - my fabric has ended up too stiff to make a roller blind with!

So - I've tried washing it to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas on how to unstiffen it?!

Which is better merino wool or peruvian highland wool?

It depends on what you're looking for. Merino wool is incredibly soft, and has a nice light hand, but it tends to be fragile. It doesn't always wear well, and is prone to fuzzing and pilling. It's lovely when softness is the main consideration, like for a scarf or baby items. But make an active boy a sweater of it, and the thing will be all pills and holes in no time at all. Peruvian Highland sheep are a cross between Merino (for the softness) and Corriedale (for durability.) You get a wool that is stronger and more durable, without losing too much in softness. It's a good all purpose wool, but not butter-soft like the merino.

What is aran wool?

Aran knitting is a classing style of knitting using lots of cables and embellishments.

Aran knitting originated in the Aran islands off the coast of Ireland. It is characterized by intricately patterned sweaters that involve lots of cables, bobbles and other designs.

It is thought that the women of the islands began to knit these sweaters in the early 1900s, both to clothe their families and to sell to tourists.

They are traditionally made from wool, which makes them warm even when wet. The first patterns for Aran sweaters were published in the 1940s, and they have been popular ever since.

Which wool is best for crocheting?

There are many types of yarn used for crocheting. Wool is just one kind of yarn that you can use. It is used for really warmer clothing items and tends to be a little rougher on the skin and some people are allergic to it. The crochet pattern will tell you what kind of yarn you need to use, size of the hook etc.. Be careful to choose a pattern like a scarf if you are beginning to learn how to crochet as they tend to be easier. Don't choose a really bulky scarf because the yarn can become entangled in the hook, and can split up. Wool also is a yarn that shrinks when you wash it but there are a lot of patterns that require wool to make a felted finished product. Felting is crocheting or knitting a hat for example, and then washing it in a machine in hot water till it becomes felted. This is nice for beginners because when it shrinks up you cannot see the mistakes that you might make when you are just beginning. I have personally never felted anything. Whatever kind of yarn you are going to use you should buy enough yarn to finish the project. This is because the dye lots are not always the same color and if you run out of yarn your scarf could end up looking like 2 different colors. This happens if the dye lot isn't available that you started with? It is a good idea to keep the label that is around the yarn so that if you run out you can refer to the dye lot to see if they still have it in the store and also for instructions on how to care for the finished product. It is also important to buy enough yarn because it can sometimes be discontinued and you won't be able to finish your project if you run out of yarn. I have a website with a wide range of items that I crocheted that explain what kind of yarn I used to make them. I also list how to care for the items for example if they are machine wash and can be put in the dryer or need to be hand washed in cold water and dried flat. Does gold bond mineral wool made in early 1900 have asbestos in it?

No.

Rock wool is made from rock that has been melted and then forced through small holes to make long, fibrous strands. It does not contain any asbestos.

Even if the rock used in the beginning did contain asbestos (and that kind of rock is not used for this) the asbestos fibers would be melted and destroyed in the manufacturing process.
