How did the wright brothers first plane become the forty forty seven?
The name given to the first of the Wright Brothers planes that flew was Wright Flyer 1. I could find no mention of forty forty seven.
They were meticulous experimenters, indeed several hundred tests in a wind tunnel on wing shape alone.
A critical observation was that the control of the aerodynamics held the key to successful flight, and indeed their significant early patent was on that - the 3-axis control of the flying surfaces.
Years of experiments with various gliders eventually led to their success. They even identified that the rotating torque of the prop was undesirable, and employed a dual contra rotating pair of props for this purpose.
