You are asking for opinion. My opinion? AirSoft guns are not especially dangerous- they were not made to be a weapon. While anything CAN be a weapon (ever been poked with a spork?) the ammo and speed of an AirSoft tend to be much safer than BB guns or pellet rifle that fire metal projectiles (Airsoft uses a plastic BB that is a different size than metal BBs). Bad influence? Well, it is a lifeless object- pretty hard for it to influence anyone. Learning to use any type of gun properly does teach patience, ability to follow directions, coordination, judgement- and it gets you the heck out of the house and outdoors for a while.

An average 12 year old will probably be encouraged by his/her friends to get one but if he understands that they can be dangerous if used incorrectly and that it is a big responsibility then im sure he will be fine.
