Sometimes if a download is offered, you will actually find yourself downloading either a trojan virus or a password-stealing keylogger.
However, if they were real, yes, they would be illegal. because in order to add points to your account they would need to hack the Microsoft servers. Which won't happen because Microsoft, a corporation that has more money than any other corporation or even government on the planet, is known to smash down ruthlessly hard on anybody who attempts to gain unauthorised access to their systems.
