General Electric (GE) has historically manufactured light bulbs in various locations, including the United States and overseas. Key manufacturing sites have included facilities in Cleveland, Ohio, and Bucyrus, Ohio. However, in recent years, GE has shifted much of its lighting production to overseas locations, such as in Asia, to reduce costs. The company's current focus is on LED technology, which is produced in different global facilities.
"The US" never sends jobs overseas. Various companies based IN the US will "send jobs overseas" - meaning, contracting work overseas or building manufacturing facilities overseas - because US workers are highly paid, and some companies figure that they can save money on manufacturing by getting that work done elsewhere. But it isn't the US government doing that. It doesn't always work out that way. Yes, a Chinese worker may work for a tenth of the cost of a US worker - but Chinese workers often make mistakes, or do poor work. Some companies have been moving manufacturing facilities back to the US, because US workers are - generally - better trained and more consistent.
There are two main reasons why a firm will build a facility in another country: 1) They want to have a manufacturing facility closer to one of their larger markets. 2) They can manufacture their products more cheaply overseas due to cheaper labour costs.
