That debate rages on.

I think that on the whole, children would be better off if their TV viewing time was cut by 80%. With the onset of ipads, ipods, computers, tablets etc, in addition to TV; children are missing out on the face-to-face interaction with their friends and all of the needful socialization that this entails in order to grow up as normal, evenly developed individuals.

Notice the commercials of to-day advertising these new technologies; even within the family, each member has his/her nose stuck in an ipad, tablet etc. They're not even interacting with their own family members. This is portrayed as "normal". This is sad.

Technology is seductive. It would take a concerted effort to bring its overuse back into the realm of reality.

We, as a society, are in trouble.

Many of our youth are already living in self imposed isolation. Without the interaction of the group to keep them anchored in reality; they are at risk of spinning off into a delusional world of their own making where the smallest perceived slight can turn into a Columbine or Newtown reaction.

Children are still growing rapidly how do you prevent children from being overweight without compromising their health?

Eat the proper foods by following along with the food pyramid - eat fruits and veggies daily (if they don't like them now, they will later) and just exercise. Limit the sweets (i.e. ice cream, candy) and especially limit the amount of time they spend on TV or video games or their computers. But have fun with them while doing this - they may get physically healthier, but forcing it on them just hurts them mentally.
