If you mean on a car-yes, at least a short one. Even if you want to run open headers research has proven you get more power (low end torque) with at least a short section of pipe in right dia. w/ a crossover. If there are emission concerns (need for convertors, etc) there is no way around it anyway

In the 1989 Grand Prix, the oxygen sensor is in the tail pipe. Look for a wire that is plugged into both the tail pipe and the undercarriage of the vehicle.
