When you get an invite to use an app from people on facebook, it isn't always sent by them. Sometimes facebook sends the app invite to the person's friends on its own. If you go into the settings in facebook, you will see an apps tab. You can control the app invites you get in those settings and even completely turn them off.
Ask your friend if you can log on to his/her facebook and message facebook.
