Also nicknamed "The Grey Lady" due to the almost regular fog, Nantucket takes its name from a word in an Eastern Algonquian language of southern New England, originally spelled variously as natocke, nantaticut, nantican, and nautican. The meaning of the term is uncertain, although it may have meant "in the midst of waters," or "far away island."
Other sources state the Native American word "Natockete," meaning "faraway land," to be Nantucket's namesake. The Wampanoag Native Americans referred to the island as "Canopache," or "place of peace."
Nantucket's airport code is ACK, which stands for Nantucket Memorial Airport. The "ACK" code is derived from the island's name, as it is a common practice to use letters from the name of the location to create the airport code. Nantucket is a popular travel destination, especially during the summer months.

The first settlement of Nantucket, Massachusetts, was established in 1659 by a group of English settlers led by Tristram Coffin. They called it "Nantucket," derived from a Native American word meaning "far away land." This settlement marked the beginning of Nantucket's history as a significant whaling and maritime center.
Nantucket was created in 1641.
