The international telephone country code for North America, including the USA, Canada, and certain island territories and countries, is +1, followed by a three-digit area code and a 7-digit subscriber number. The length of the number should always be exactly 10 digits after country code +1. There are multiple area codes for different locations in North Carolina, including some areas that have more than one area code serving the same communities, so you need to know the area code and number for the person you are calling.

If you are calling from a mobile phone, just enter the number in international format, beginning with the plus symbol. If you are calling from a landline, substitute the prefix 00 for the plus symbol.

00 = international access prefix for calls from Ireland

+1 = telephone country code for North America, including USA

(3-digit area code)

(7-digit subscriber number)

For example (fictitious number): 00 1 212 555 0123

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but North America (USA, Canada, etc.) uses 011, Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)

The Republic of Ireland is telephone country code +353, and you must drop the trunk prefix 0 from the beginning of the Irish domestic telephone number. For example, Cork's area code 021 becomes +353 21. The length of telephone numbers may vary, even within a given city or town.

On a mobile phone (cell phone), you can dial in international format, beginning with +353 (including the plus symbol).

Otherwise, substitute the US/North American international access prefix, 011, for the plus symbol.

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. Landlines in Northern Ireland are in area code +44 28, with 8-digit local numbers; mobiles from anywhere in the UK have numbers beginning with +44 74 through +44 79, with 8 more digits for the full number. Dial +44-etc. or 011-44-etc. for Northern Ireland.

All landlines in Northern Ireland use UK telephone area code 028, which is +44 28 in international format, followed by an 8-digit subscriber number.

Calling from the Republic of Ireland, you can dial the number in full international format (beginning with +44 28 on a mobile, or 00 44 28 on a landline telephone), or you can use the special "shortcut" code 048.

Mobiles from Northern Ireland use the same numbering ranges as mobiles from the rest of the UK, and must be dialed in full international format; e.g., +44 7700 900123 or 00 44 7700 900123. UK mobile numbers begin with +44 74 through +44 79.

All calls from Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland must be dialed in full international format. Replace the trunk prefix 0 of the area code with +353 or 00 353. There is no longer a "shortcut" code for calls from N.I. to the Republic.
