They can be, but it looks stupid. There will be a number on the underside of the lid, something like a (Crane)3-582 or a (American Standard) 4014. Find the name of the toilet, this number from the lid,(if you can't see the number from the lid, try the inside back of the tank), and check the second hand building supply or Plumbing stores in your area for the matching lid. A lot of toilets get wrecked, and some places save the lids for this reason.
