To get your new iPhone to sync, connect it to Wi-Fi and sign in with your Apple ID. If moving from an old iPhone, you can use iCloud Backup: back up the old device, then during setup, choose Restore from iCloud Backup.
Alternatively, use iTunes/Finder on a computer: connect via USB, back up your old iPhone, then restore the backup to the new one.
For more control, you can use MobiKin Assistant for iOS, which lets you selectively transfer contacts, messages, photos, music, and more between your old and new iPhone. Simply connect both devices to your computer, choose the data types, and start the transfer.
You can also enable iCloud syncing in Settings > [your name] > iCloud to keep apps, photos, contacts, and other data automatically synced over Wi-Fi.
If you just recently got a new iPhone 4, connect it to iTunes and iTunes will identify it as a new phone. If you have previously synced your iPhone 3G with that computer before, then iTunes should give you the option to sync the new iPhone with a backup from your latest iPhone 3G sync. When you do that, your files from your 3G will be transferred to your iPhone 4. Hope that helps :)
I had this problem too. I had iTunes installed already, but when I tried to sync my iPhone, nothing came up on my iPhone screen. I quit iTunes, and unplugged my iPhone, then plugged it back in and opened iTunes again.

Unless that computer has all your music, you will lose all the music on your iPhone and it will be replaced with their music. So instead, if you just want their music but still keep your music, just drag the music files to your iPhone.
