When composing a message, click the square smiley face emoticon located to the right of the 'Text Color' and 'Highlight Color' icons below the 'Subject' line. Doing so will reveal 79 emoticons, including a heart (and broken heart) on the bottom row. Click the heart to insert it into the 'Compose' box.
You can access a different version of the heart and broken heart in a separate tab of emoticons, viewable by clicking the circular smiley face emoticon below the 79 emoticons. To add even more emoticons, activate the 'Extra Emoji' lab in the Labs section of Gmail's Settings: https://mail.Google.com/mail/?shva=1#settings/labs
